New puppy today ...........?

We got a cross breed, labrador and german shepherd today, he is a wonderful puppy and we decided we wanted to put him in a crate at night to sleep. I have made it all cosy for him, with a lovely blanket in there with new toys. I have also spent all evening putting his treats in there, but tonight when we have tried to go to bed, he is howling and crying. Now to a point we expected this, but not so loudly, it has not only woken our household, but the neighbours too. What can I do to quieten him a little so the neighbours sleep? I dont want to get him out or he will think he is the boss, but this is not fair to the neighbours.

What should we do?

  1. Well if the crate is not in the room that you sleep in then you could try to do that. Before it gets dark out you should take him for a walk or play with him for a while.  You could also try to leave the T.V. on or the radio on while he sleeps.

  2. if you drape a sheet around it and make it dark, it'll feel like his cave. Also make sure its near you so he knows you havent left him alone.

  3. Yup on the first night if you got your pup from a liter of pups, they will howl and cry alllll night.

The best thing you can do is probably put a heating pad next to him, and a ticking clock. The heating pad will comfort the puppy so it'll feel like his mother and litermates are with him. And the ticking clock is like the mother's heart beat to make him feel at home.

Then you just ignore him. Just make sure he has plenty of toys and water

  4. Best thing to do take him for a run and crate a least half an hour before you go to bed let him settle while your downstairs watching tv or whatever doing something quiet-ish. you may have to try a few things that have being posted, but use your common sense when reading them!! ticking clock, hot water bottle, comfortimg smells to him, maybe a very small amount of food all very good ideas but nothing new and exciting its bedtime for godsake lol!! but make sure its all set up before you go on your walk ready for when you get back and let him settle and go to sleep where he can probably still see you and when hes sleeping you go do the same. He should turn out to be a nice dog a good mix!

  5. make sure you tire out your puppy by maybe playing or taking a walk. even as short as 10 minutes will do!

remember, it's a PUPPY. so its normal. of coarse its going ot want to play more and not go to sleep and be a naughty little fellow! ive been there with my dog!

to get my dog used to her crate, i didnt give it to her the first night, i gave it to her a couple months in. she had to get used to my house first! and i left the crate in the middle of the room, letting her sniff it and all.

itll all eventually work out! just time and patients!

    GOOD LUCK!

  6. Be prepared for this to happen for a few nights yet. Trust me I know how noisy they can be. One of my pups proved to me that  a 1lb Chihuahua pup can make as much if not more noise than a St Bernard!

Make sure the puppy is well and truly pooped before putting himt o bed. While he is still wide awake and active things will only be worse. Play with him until he's fit to drop and then let him potty and put him to bed. You will probably have to get him up at least once in the night for a while to potty. Pups can rarely go all night without a bathroom break nor should it be expected.

Try putting the crate in your room where the pup can see you. Also put a warm hot water bottle in the crate for him to snuggle with. If you have a clock with a loud tick put it right next to the crate.

Good news is this only usually lasts for a few nights, but bad news if you won't be getting too much sleep while it does. Hope you have understanding neighbours.

  7. i read a book and it said you should walk by the dog to say I'm still here but don't talk to it plus in the first couple of nights he going to do that as he in a new place and he scared

  8. Try putting a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket in his kennel. Also a ticking alarm clock sounds like a heart beat and can be soothing.  Also you can try putting a TV on so her hears voices or putting his kennel near you bed so he can be in his crate and still next to you.

  9.   This is normal. Congrats on deciding to crate him.  I know some will say this is cruel but dogs needs a safe haven for themselves and will learn this is their space.  Also this will be better to house train him as dogs normally wont go in a crate unless they have not been taken out enough.  Explain to neighbors about the new dog, but it will take him time to get used to a new home.  He will soon learn that when it gets dark he has to go to sleep. Do take him out to walk daily, maybe 2x a day, so that when its time for bed he is tired enough.

  10. Your pup is probably not that old and has just recently left it`s mom and brothers and sisters it is lonely.

If you know who the breeder is get a hold of them and ask them for something like a blanket or towel or a toy that the mom and other pups slept on this will make your little guy feel more secure and should help quiet him down.

Enjoy your new friend and don`t fret as this behavior will pass, just give him lots of love.

    Good luck and God bless

  11. you could try leaving a light on for him, or try leaving a radio on so its not so quiet and scary for him! other than that its a case of grin and bear it, All puppies do it and unless you are prepared to have him with you at all times there is nothing else you can do, he will get used to it!

  12. He will calm down after a week or so. He is not used to being alone. Try getting a clock and putting it in or under a teddy that has a heatable stomache, or a hot water bottle. The clock will sound like a heart beat, and along with the warmth he should be comforted enough to sleep.

  13. I agree. Take him out for a quick jog, to make sure he's nice and sleepy.

Also, hot water bottles for warmth and a ticking clock will help him to feel less alone. He's just adjusting right now :)

    Much luck!

  14. your dog sounds lonely in his bed, despite your best efforts to make it lively and comfortable. Some people say that playing soft music helps soothe them to sleep. Try this, and if this doesn't work, then come in and soothe him until he is asleep. Do this until he falls asleep on his own every night and then you can start enforcing the rule to stay in his bed. I hope this works!

  15. You have to take him on a very very very very long walk and then he will go to sleep calmly

  16. Your puppy is confused, frightened and lonely. He has just left his mother and his litter mates, please don't listen to the people who are telling you to leave it to cry. If you use the following method you can stop it from crying in one or two days. The people who leave their puppies to cry will have dogs who will suffer from separation anxiety for the rest of its life.

Anticipate that when you leave your dog alone, it may develop separation anxiety. To prevent this you must ensure that your dog has his own quite place to rest.  Puppies need lots of sleep in order to develop into a healthy and well adjusted dog.

The following is my method of preventing separation anxiety and starting potty training. Put your dog in a separate room if possible, then go out of this room and close the door. Open the door immediately and go into the room again, ignore your dog whilst pretending to clean the counter tops or pretend to do something else for a very short time. Go out of the room and immediately go back in again, keep doing this and gradually increase the amount of time which you stay on the other side of the door. Try to leave him in peace apart from doing the door thing.

Timing is vital and you must do this try to get back into the room BEFORE YOUR PUPPY CRIES. Eventually your puppy will go to sleep and will be convinced that you are just on the other side of the door. When you know that he is asleep stop going into the room, however you MUST LISTEN FOR HIM WAKING UP.

When you know that he is awake, go into the room lift him up and take him into the garden for a pee and whilst he is doing this say “get one” and praise him profusely. Puppies need feeding about four times a day, although he may have a pee before his feed you should also take him out again afterwards. You must always take him out when it wakes up and after he has had food or drink. It’s also a good idea to let him explore your yard/garden afterwards.Play with your puppy and give him fun.

It is vital that you continue with the door thing for the first few days. To ensure that you have a happy puppy try to devote all of your time to him for the first two weeks.  This will  help with potty training, however he will not have any control for the first few weeks and he will pee during the night.. To help him, use newspaper that you have rubbed in one of the pees that he has done outside and leave several layers of newspaper on the floor. Leave the cage door open and  he will toilet on the newspaper during the night.

    GOOD LUCK.

  17. Make sure that dog is dog tired before putting him to bed!   Play ball or take a long walk before bed time.  Otherwise, you just have to be patient, he'll learn your routine, after all it's only been a day!

  18. He scared and feels abandoned.Would you like to be put in a cage at night. No,and you'd be wailing.Puppies are taken away from their mother too soon,so he has still to be nurtured.

He is a baby, and you are his parents,so show some compassion for the rascals age.

900 dogs and 1000 cats have to be humanely destroyed in the UK each week, due to no homes for them, and you bought a puppy,l do hope it was from the dog charities and not a pet store.

  19. Well there are some classes at a store called Pet-smart specially for puppy's like yours. you may want to take some classes. Its really worth it. But alot of people say u should just ignore them, but with ur neighbors and all i dont think it realy gonna work that way. Just try to get him used to him being there like rite before u go to work (if u work) and just try to get him used to it in the day so he will be more aware of it a nite

    hope this helps =D

  20. put a clock in there. it's the same principal as a human baby. it'll think it's a heartbeat.

  21. I had this problem when we got our new dog, but he's only little so wasn't loud enough to wake the neighbours!

Here are some tricks that could help:

    - hot water bottle under the blanket

    - ticking clock (mimics mother's heartbeat)

    - not NEW toys, but things that smell comforting, like something from his old home; maybe an old blanket or old clothing (but be careful, as you don't want him to think that all your clothing is HIS when it's out on the washing line!)

The thing that helped with my puppy was the hot water bottle and the old smelly blanket. The new toys we gave him had a stark, rubbery smell and they weren't comforting to him at night, even though he loved chewing on them during the day.

  22. why don't you take him up to your room and let him sleep in their

  23. something that worked very well with our puppy was the little heartbeat bear that are actually made for babies. it's an actual recording of a heartbeat. to babies it sounds like the heartbeat through the womb. works wonders for baby pets too.

  24. From what it sounds like, this is a pretty normal situation (especially for a Shepherd mix). His goal is to bark until you let him out. You are definately right in your thinking though, if you let him out tonight then it will continue to happen, thus thinking that he is the boss. As bad as it sounds (trust me, I know how annoying it can be lol) the best thing to do is to keep him in there and let him bark. If you put him in a dark place, he is likely to fall asleep faster. He will also associate his crate with sleeping and nothing else. Make sure he is not in view of anyone walking by, or it will worsen the situation. Trust me, it will get better if you do this from the start! =)

  25. Unfortunately, you are doing the right things but on the first night away from litter mates this kind of behaviour is only to be expected.

You could try turning the lights off and lying next to the crate until he falls asleep, pretend like you are sleeping and don't give him any attention and hopefully he'll settle down. I put a big cuddly toy with a hot water bottle under it in my pups crate to help her feel like she had company and something warm and comforting to snuggle up to.
