I just adopted an 8 month old American Staffordshire Terrier-mutt a couple days ago and he can't stop humping and mounting other dogs (yes, he's neutered) . Tonight he started a fight with my boyfriend's female dog...he kept on humping/mounting her and she wasn't having it. At first, when she would snap at him to leave her alone he would immediately get off of her...but now it seems as though hes obsessed with asserting his dominance! What can i do to make him chill out around other dogs and stop picking fights? i know he's just trying to show that he's the "alpha" so how can i break him of that? he's so calm and well-behaved when no other dogs are around!!!

  1. You need to teach him what is acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable behavior. When he starts humping, non-mark him (No), and stop him from humping (with his collar or with a drag lead). Then stop play for a while (i.e. get him to do a down and don't let him get up until he has calmed down).

If he starts up again right away, then non-mark him (No), and if he continues say time-out and remove him to a time-out area (a safe but boring room, e.g. laundry room). Leave him in there for a couple of minutes and let him out. If he starts up again, non-mark him (No), and say time-out and put him back in time-out. This time lengthen the duration to about 10-15 minutes. Note that if your dog stops the bad behavior, make sure to praise him a lot and give him good treats. Keep this up and your dog will learn that certain behaviors get him rewards while others get him into a boring room with nothing to do.

  2. Get signed up for some obedience classes.  Preferably at a training center not just a six week course at PetCo or some other store.  This will teach him to behave around other dogs, people, and other distractions and it will teach you how make him behave.  It would be a great learning experience for both of you and would help him expend some of that energy.  Good luck.

  3. When he is naughty, tell him no in a firm voice..make sure he knows that what he's doing is naughty. If he keeps doing it, put him outside for 5 minutes.

Be patient because it might take a while especially if your puppy is like mine! (special ed lol)

  4. I'm going through the same dang thing. -.-

My new german/husky mix can't stop humping my other, older dog. I have a spray bottle on hand and spay her in the face and say "No!" and keep on doing that. She's getting better- but she is at her sexual peak and so there isn't much else I can do but that. Same with you :)

    Good luck!
