We were planning on having her spayed when she gained weight. We have had her about a week now and she's just gone into heat. I have never had a dog in heat, and I don't know how to keep the house clean, or if there is anything else I need to be doing? Please, any info you have on this subject is GREATLY appriciated...

  1. at any pet supply store they have special sanitary diapers (with a little hole for the tail). any kind or doggy diaper will do, or if you want to get fancy, toddler or baby underpants with a regular maxi-pad works great too. Just make sure to keep her "area" really clean and don't leave things around for her to chew. Female dogs sometimes chew due to anxiety during their period.

And keep away from male dogs... unless you want puppies =)

  2. You should probably get a doggie diaper and pads so she doesn't bleed and make a mess on your furniture, other than that, make sure she doesn't have access to any males!  You can spay her while she is in heat but it can be a more difficult procedure with higher risks.

  3. Dogs will be in heat approximately 3 weeks or 21 days.

You need to keep her away from all male dogs the whole 21 days/3 weeks. When she goes outside she needs to be under constant supervision so that she doesn't get pregnant.

You can get doggie diapers at the pet store so that your house stays clean.

  4. doggy diapers and clean up any spots you find. Keep her away from intact males obviously. keep her indoors at all time and only outside under supervision. call your vet tomorrow and make an appointment to have her spayed as soon as she is out of heat.

  5. Most likely you will not have to do anything but keep her securely away from unneutered male dogs.

If she spots blood a lot, you can go to the pet store and buy a panty called a "seasonal", it velcros on easily, you put a small pad like a daily pad in it and change it when needed - that easy.

Calm down, no big deal at all.   Good of you to rescue, wish more people would.

  6. The blood loss is not heavy, you will just see drops on the floor and on her bedding, she will try and keep herself clean.

You can buy doggie diapers or just use an old pair of pants, but l don't see the need, it's easy to clean up after them.

You need to supervise her at all times when around boy dogs to avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

The heat will last about 3 weeks and the blood loss will slow down towards the end.

You should wait until 2 to 3 months after the heat has finished before spaying, this way the blood flow through the reproductive organs will have returned to normal.

Some vets will spay during heat but it carries more risks and vets tend to charge more, l feel it's better to wait.
