Question:

New roommate who wants dorm room too hot?

My new roommate apparently needs to live in a sauna. She just moved in yesterday and has constantly been complaining that the room is "too cold." She set the thermostat to 83 degrees. When that wasn't warm enough, she just turned it off completely.

Now my room is 86 degrees, and it's 98 degrees outside. I'm not too specific to temperature, I just want my room to be less than 80 degrees in the summer. Otherwise, it's too hot to be in my room to study, sleep, or do anything else.

If I complain or turn the thermostat back on, she just complains again. I know people have different preferences about indoor temperature, but requiring that the room be so hot is extreme.

Also, residential life doesn't allow us to change rooms for the first three weeks of the semester. They want roommates to "work out problems." But I don't want to live in an 86 degree room for the next three weeks. What should I do? Please help?

  1. buy her a sweatshirt

  2. Tell her that you aren't comfortable in that sort of heat. Ask her if she could compromise by wearing a sweater or a long-sleeved shirt if she feels too cold. Or ask her to turn the thermostat down to at least 80 degrees, so it's not as incredibly hot as it was before.

  3. buy a lock box for the thermostat and when she is gone install it, set it at 75 and buy her a cute sweater and throw
