New stories about Miami Marlins emerge after Ozzie Guillen faces five game suspension - MLB Update
Now playing for the Oakland Athletics, Yoenis Cespedes gives way to questions about his not signing a contract with the Miami Marlins in the first place. As he refuses to comment on the recent fiasco about Fidel Castro, reports are surfacing pointing at
the politically packed culture in Marlins as a reason of his preferring Oakland Athletics instead.
This may serve to further fuel the issue and thus grievances of Cuban American communities in Marlins are likely to grow. Anything like this is going to be an escalation of trouble for Guillen, who is already under a five game suspension.
The fact there is a huge Cuban community residing there, which is one of the greatest fan bases of the Marlins, a decision stating an altogether elimination of Guillen can never be ruled out.
Amaury Pi-Gonzalez performs the duties in Athletics’ Spanish broadcast and cites an instance of his conversation with Cespedes as proof of him being apolitical and thus a reason enough to have discouraged him from going with the Marlins.
"Miami's very political, and he feels more at ease, more relaxed here," said Amaury Pi-Gonzalez. "When I met (Céspedes), I said, 'I will not ask you anything political.' He said, 'Even if you did, I won't talk about it.' From that indication, he doesn't
want to get involved. He just wants to play ball. He could be idolized in Miami, but the pressure would be humongous."
The very culture that has developed in the Marlins encourages political discussion and this is the reason why their manager spoke out in public at the time when he was supposed to stick to baseball.
Cespedes will be playing with the Marlins if it was not for the political culture prevailing there.
Since Cespedes is among those players that were liked by the Marlins, the fans will have seen some icing on the cake on their enjoyments which they have seen in the form of new Marlins ballpark and new uniforms.
As new stories unfold, to what extent politics have kept players estranged from the team will be clearer. One will hope that as Guillen returns after suspension, he will be a transformed person, one more concerned about baseball than politics.
