Question:

New teacher job search in NYC. How do I land a job?

I'm a new teacher looking for a teaching position with the NYC DOE. I'll be certified to teach middle and high school mathematics.

I've filled out the TeachNYC on-line application and am awaiting word on approval. I've been invited to the NYC DOE 2ndary school job fair this coming Thursday. I also have a DHR interview set for the 20th.

I've also sent out about 40 resumes to local schools and have had no responses. This is frustrating and disappointing. I understand budget cuts are under way, but I was hoping to have landed a few interviews by now.

My plan was to call principals after July 4th to inquire about pending openings for September. I will also send another round of resumes.

If I don't get any responses, I'll pound the pavement in late July early August.

Are there any other ways to land a teaching position in NYC???

  1. i hear that there are many jobs for good math teachers out there-  with good pay rates esp in NY area.

contact them by phone right now- let people kno u are out there - you can choose your job as there are so many math positions open.

  2. If i was you go to another schools or in the other states that help one of my family member

  3. Siftin.com might help you find job through top online as well as local sites

    Good Luck

  4. Don't bother calling principals they are not the ones that do the hiring.

If other schools are like my school all the interviews for September are done.  They had round 1, 2 and 3 already and people are already being called about jobs.  The only reason to reinterview is if someone backs out in August, which is possible.

If you don't get a job relax you can always be a sub, you learn a lot that way.  When I stressed about interviews and getting a job, I found nothing.  When I relaxed and sent out resumes, and just forgot about them I got 2 offers.

  5. Don't call principals, they are not in their office after July 4. And they are not the person to contact anyway.

Contact the School Superintendent's office and ask for the person who handles Secondary Education.  Usually each district has a person who handles teacher hirings and this is the person to contact.

go to the fair and put on your best face.  Carry a resume, but don't offer it until after you have talked to someone.  Resume's get you an interview, so why give it up front face to face?  AFtrer the fact, it will help them to remember you.

Don't stop sending resumes to schools, especially PRIVATE schools.
