I am a Mom of two children, ages 12 and 8. I am going to be homeschooling them for the first time this year and we start tomorrow! Does anyone have any advice or comments who have been in this situation before? I am kind of nervous!

Thank You!

  1. As long as you understand everything in their curriculum, you should be fine. Just take everything step by step, do schooling at a comfortable hour, and have fun!

  2. Well some of my cousins are homeschooled and i was for middle school.now im bak in public but anyway what i did was wake up around 9 and then do school for an average of bout 3 hours a day and maybe sometimes a little less (ya we slacked) but i think 2 hours is plenty of stright schooling but thats ur choice. My mom was at work so she never sat there and did the work with me it was kinda like i taught myself so if u wanna be there and try to teach your kids then good but it will take some work.Just get a cirriculum and go by what the book says and u will be fine. =)

  3. The biggest thing I had to overcome when I started out was not imitating what the public school day looks like. Be flexible, allow lots of breaks and fun. Don't get bogged down with complicated curriculum and forget to nurture the relationship with your kids. It may take them a while to "deschool" and get used to really learning. That's fine! Set modest goals and don't get discouraged if you don't get to everything you have planned.

Make sure you follow your children's interests when you plan what to teach as well.

I started homeschooling when my oldest was in 6th grade. I had only a high school diploma and a great support group. She is now getting ready to start a community college tomorrow as a junior in high school. Both of my kids do exceptionally well on testing. They both have a great social life and considered leaders among there peers, both home schooled and public schooled. I say all this to encourage you that you can do it! Pray a lot and have fun with it.

    Blessings!

  5. I would recommend finding a homeschooling group for your area using Yahoo Groups.  It worked for me.  = )
