  1. Hi New T,

I am glad you asked that question while the bike is still new. I assume this is your first multi-speed bicycle.

The left-hand shifter is for the front gears. The gears on the front are called "Chain-rings", and are bolted to the pedals. There are usually three chainrings on most bicycles.

The right-hand shifter controls the rear gear cluster. The rear shifter is called a deraileur, and it has some things the front deraileur doesn't have. The rear deraileur has two little gears and a spring, to keep tension on the chain. Otherwise there would be slack in the chain, and the chain would fall off. The main difference between the front and rear shifter is that the rear has the little gears and a spring to take up slack in the chain.

Can I tell you when to use them? You will have to learn for yourself. I don't know how strong your legs are.

But I will give you this advice: Shift into a lower gear Before going up any hills.

You must be pedaling while shifting, but NOT pedaling hard.

It is a little tricky to learn. If you don't pedal while shifting, the chain will tangle and possibly jam.

If you pedal too hard, the chain will stay meshed with the gear you are in, and will suddenly jam.

    Some more information:

Your bike has a set of gears that range from low to high. In low gear , one turn of the pedals will equal one turn of the rear wheel. In high gear, one turn of the pedals will make the rear wheel turn almost five times.

Low gear is for climbing hills. There are other gears for hills that aren't as steep. High gear is for going full speed on flat ground.

You should choose the highest gear that you can push. As I said, I don't know how strong your legs are, so you will have to choose the gear yourself.
