I really want to start crew (rowing) and I don't know anything about it really! I love the water and athletics so I'm really excited but need help.

Where do you learn (from scratch)?

How do you find/get picked/join a team?

What to expect?

What to wear?

How much do lessons cost?

Resources........

  1. Rowing is a great sport, but it is a really tough sport to learn and a race is just h**l. Ive just started rowing last year and im loving it. Rowing is pretty expensive do. I think thats why you all those see preppy guys rowing and stuff. Good to where skins too so you dont get the blade caught on any of your clothing, and dont wear a long shirt otherwise tuck it in so it doesnt get caught in the slide and rip. But if you are small enough to be a coxswain, its good to where lots of warm clothing,But rowing is pretty cool, besides the early mornings.

  2. To row competitively takes very high fitness. A race is not too much unlike trying 10 sets of 20 squats and 10 sets of pull-ups, along with 250 situps, all in 7 minutes.

Its a combination strength and cardio exercise.  Races are 2,000 meters, and depending on level last about 6 - 7 1/2 minutes.

One should wear a snug top so the oars can't get caught in it, and not long so the seat wheels won't get caught. Singlets are ideal.

Its tough to learn from scratch.  If in poor condition, you are wasting people's time, unless you are small and want to cox, and like to be awake before dawn.

Get in shape, so you can at least be competitive on the preferred indoor rower, the Concept 2.  That will get people's attention.  Check the Concept2 forums on the net, and find a local gym or rowing club where you can use one.  The website also has a training guide.  You can also inquire about clubs from the forums.

Equipment is expensive, which is why lessons are not free unless you know someone. They also won't be free if you don't appear to be serious or have potential.

To cox, you'll need to ride and be available when regulars can't make it.  An 8-oar shell costs as much as a medium priced new car, so it is a lot of responsibility ot take care of it on the water.

But those of us who row, absolutely love it.
