...how to keep progress/grade records?

This is our 1st year homeschooling. We're in Virginia, my child is in 7th grade & plans to go to college.

I'm wondering about progress records, what's expected & needed 1. for public/private schools, in case he goes back to that before graduation 2. for college acceptance consideration.

Are there formal ways of keeping these records & what details should be included?

Thanks!

  1. Homeschool Tracker is a wonderful program that you can keep records on.  The basic version is free, but it can do only about 1/10 of what the Plus Version can do.

With the Plus Version you can:

Keep track of assignments, grades, time spent, credits earned, attendance, keep a journal, make a schedule, save lesson plans to use with another child, print report cards, print transcripts, time spent reports, daily tasks lists, reading logs, keep track of materials and costs, and lots more!

I don't work for them, I just use the program.

  2. Try www.donnayoung.org  There are tons of very helpful forms there, and suggestions for keeping records.

The colleges aren't going to care about grades except for 9th through 12th.  Donnayoung also has transcripts forms and suggestions.

If he goes back to public, they won't care what he did in homeschool.  They will test him themselves to determine what level to put him in.  If he tries to go back in high school, they'll probably give him a "final exam" for every high school course he claims to have completed in homeschool, English, math, science, and history.  They probably won't give him credit if he doesn't pass THEIR test, no matter what your records -- or the records of any umbrella, satellite, extension, correspondence or online school -- say.  Because when he graduates from their school, they have to be able to state with certainty that he has earned every credit.  So my suggestion is that if he's going to go back, he should go back at the beginning of the ninth grade, or plan on graduating from homeschool.

  3. Most Home school programs like ACE, Abeka, Alpha and Omega offer to the parents materials you can buy to keep records on.  You should keep records on attendance and each subject they are in. I recommend writing down each assignment and keep records just as a teacher does. You can also go to a teachers store in your area and they should have what you need.  If you would like to research different curriculum please go to my web site below. Also if you have any questions or need any further help you may e-mail me through my web site. Have a nice day.

  5. Hi!

I'm in VA, too.  Go to www.HSLDA.org, and join them.  They have tons of resources fro HSing, esp thru High School.  They even have HS Coordinators you can call with questions.

Also try the Transcript Boot Camp DVDs.

Be sure to get all of this info now, because there are some things you can do in 7th and 8th grade to help yourself later.

Are you near Leesburg?  There is a wonderful co-op there.
