I went ice skating for the first time yesterday, I am going to join a how to skate class. When I went yesterday for most of the time I was holding on to the siding, and wore my arm out. Just wondering if anyone had any pointers on how to skate.

  1. Hold your arms out and don't be afraid, try to not hold onto the side, i did that for awhile and when i finally tried i was able to do it.

  2. Use your arms for balance, and do small "marches" into a glide to skate. Good luck!

  3. Learn how to rollerblade first, it is exactly like ice skating, except it is harder to turn on land! Also try marching steps with your hands out on ice. Practice balancing on two feet on land,to help you with balance.Good Luck!  :D

  4. just glide and lean to keep your balance and use your arms and stuff. I started skating when i was like six and it just came natural to me, but once you get the hang of it its really easy!

  5. well i really dont know  but you just like balance but ive been skating competitive for a long time

  6. Here are some tips:

    1) stand up straight - don't lean forward or backward

    2) put your arms out to the side for balance

    3) bend your knees

    4) look straight ahead (not down at the ice)

    5) try to do little marches/steps - don't lift your knees very high.  Just try to pick up one foot at a time and step forward.  It's okay to hold onto the boards until you get the feel for this - just try to hold on with one hand so you don't mess up your posture.  :)

Once you get into your classes, they'll teach you how to move on from marching to doing swizzles and then to doing glides and actual stroking.  Have fun!
