  1. Find out what zone you are in first.  Then try to hook up with a gardener or a gardening club.  As a long time gardener, I beg people to take my baby plants away.  You will save a fortune this way.

If you can't find either of these resources, wait a month or so and garden centers will be having close out sales.  Perennials planted in the fall will come back in the spring.

Good choices for easy growth are coreopsis, anything in the daisy family and coneflowers, as long as you have sun exposure.  Take some books out of the library specific to your are for some other ideas.

    Happy gardening!

  2. Welcome to gardening, Rebecca!  This was my first year planting things too.  The other answer was awsome, the only thing I would add is that I found I had better luck getting answers to questions if I asked on like a Saturday or Sunday morning  or afternoon (I am refering to this site) cause more people are off work and up and about. I can't wait for early spring cause I know I will have TONS of questions for planting! Have fun and good luck!  :)
