  1. If you are trying climbing french beans put some sweet peas in with them to attract the beas.

Add some Mangetout (Sugarsnaps) in with your beans.

This way you will have peas & beans in the same area of land (at the back of your plot).

  2. fertilise and mulch the garden 2 weeks before planting.

Plant the veggies, mulch and water well and keep possums away.

  3. if you plant zucchini, 2 plants will be enough for you and everyone you know.

  4. keep it neat.  weed every day.  water every other day. don't for get to fertilize this will help your plant grow.  the rest leave to nature.  you can use hay or newspaper around the plants to stop the weeds.  the newspaper does not look as good but it is cheaper and does not cause more weeds later on. good luck

  5. This is a complex question but, here is some general guidelines.

Before you even contemplate growing anything in your garden know the location of your house so you know the best places to plant. The location of the sun will be different depending on the seasons. You need to know how much sun your plants need to really produce abundantly.

Before deciding what you are going to plant make sure you understand the yield of each plant. This will ensure you don't have excess vegetables. It is also important as you don't want to use precious space for one type of crop when you could have a variety of crops.

If growing from seed yourself always sow more than you need. You can always give away the excess. This allows for some seeds not germinating.

If purchasing from a nursery and the punnets are excess to your needs find somebody to share with.

Root vegetables such as carrots should be sown direct where they are to grow to avoiding forking.

There are a number of simple reference books on the market that list vegetables and their nutrient needs. Don't get too bogged down but you should understand what plants use and need to grow. This will ensure future crops are not planted in nutrient depleted areas also.

Make sure your soil is friable and has good drainage. Boggy soil will provide poor results.

Mulch mulch mulch. This will ensure your vegetable roots are kept cool on hot days and the moisture is not lost quickly from the soil. Also mulching assists in keeping weeds down.

Ensure you keep the weeds under control. Because I mulch I tend to weed only once every 2 weeks. It takes me around 2 hours and I have a substantial garden.

I am in Australia and it is very dry in the Summer. With heavy mulching and no rain I only need to water twice a week.

Learn about companion planting. This will mean you can grow your vegetables without expansive environmentally unfriendly pesticides. It also makes your garden very friendly to the environment. Don't be afraid to grow vegetables amoung your other plants. It can be very pretty. I have Australian natives and vegetables growing together.  Planting bee attracting flowers around some vegetables is beneficial for pollination and saves you hand pollinating.

I have a list of books that may be off assistance to you:  http://www.potentialtime.com/gardeningbo...

  6. Harvest things when they are ready, not to early not too late.  make sure plants have enough space.

  7. I use blood'n bone a week before I put the vegies in.  Spade it over, and then heap it in rows... (For good drainage).  The idea of the paper is great to suppress the weeds.  Every few weeks you could fertilize the vegie garden with blood 'n bone or if growing tomatoes, use tomato feed.  Go to your local nursery and see what vegie seedlings are there.  They will know what is best to grow now.  Goodluck and enjoy the fruits of your labour.  :)
