My husband and I have recently build a water garden in my back yard, which will have koi and water plants in it. I bought a water lily today(one that was potted and already had a flower on it), anyway...on my way home the flower broke off my plant. I want to know if it will grow another flower or if that will be it for the year. Oh, by the way...it's a hardy native water lily, and I'm in Oklahoma(as far as climate goes). Any advice would be good. Thanks.

  1. i think that would be it for the year.until next good luck with your water garden.

  2. Water lilies are really easy. Yours will probably have more flowers this season if it has plenty of leaves, and is in 2 feet or more of water in a sunny spot.

When the fall comes the foliage will start to die back. Cut off all the foliage and dispose of it. Don't let it rot in the pond. Sink the lily to the deepest part of the pond. In spring, you may want to re-pot it into a larger container. Sink it in a shallow part of the pond first, until the leaves reach the surface, then put it in a deeper part to encourage long stalks and flowering. It should flower all summer from May until September. Mine does, and I live in Pennsylvania. Lilies are great for keeping the water cooler, for giving shelter to fish, and for soaking up nitrogen from the water -- as well as looking beautiful.
