New wiring problem.?

Hi, I am sticking spot lights on my room. I took the ceiling rose off and tried connecting the cables to the new one on the spot light.

On the ceiling i have 2 red wires, 2 black (one with red cover) and the yellow/green earth.

On the new spot light, I have brown, blue and earth. What do I connect to what connection? I did this before but the new connection baffles me.

  1. Brown is positive and blue is neutral. As to how that matches up with your red and black I don't know.

  2. Can't understand why some idiot is giving a thumbs down to Pauline & nicklin_i ? Because they have given a 100% correct answer. So Nitronics I think you now know what to do!

  3. Go with the answer from PAULINE. Its the right answer and the only person who knows wot there 100% talking about.

Also, if the ceiling rose has been connected correctly, the black wire with the red sleeve will be in a set of two terminals with the brown wire from the old ceiling light(connect your brown wire to this  one).  The 2 red wires will be in a set of 3 terminals in the middle (dont connect to these, leave them connected to each other) and the black wire will also be in a set of 3 terminals with the blue wire from the old ceiling light (connect your blue wire to this one). connect all green/yellow together.

IN SHORT, GO WITH PAULINE'S ANSWER

  4. Hi,

    My first advice is:

Find an accredited residential electrician and ask her/his advice and estimate for doing the work for you and if a permit or inspection is required.  Electricity is lethal if not handled with the utmost care.

If you choose to do-it-yourself, borrow a current (sorry for the pun!) copy of your country's electrical code and a good electrical DIY book from your local library.

The following notes cannot be relied upon as I do not know which country you are in nor the applicable Electrical Codes.  They are provided for general information and if you choose to follow them, you do so at your own risk because, I cannot be with you to oversee your work, nor am i a master/ticketted etc. electrician.

Before you start, ensure that the weight of the spot lamps can be supported by a ceiling joist etc.  Fitting to a drywall ceiling may result in the lamps taking advantage of gravity to swing from the wires which would be a bad thing.

Isolate your room light circuit by identifying the breaker in your electrical panel and switching the breaker to the "off" position.

Buy a "hot wire" detector" and hold it against the ceiling wires.

If there is no beep from the detector, you know that you isolated the correct breaker.  If it beeps, you got the wrong breaker so start again.  When you have found the correct breaker, turn it back on and carefully check the ceiling wires again.  If the light can be switched on/off from more than one light switch, there could be several combinations of hot wires depending on which switch is on and which is'nt.

When you removed the previous light fixture, you will have noted which wires on the fixture were connected to which ceiling wires.  Check that the new lights have labels etc complying with the UL, CSA, AUSNEC etc certification for use in your country.

The light should have come with fitting instructions so I assume the lights are used.  The UK uses brown as hot, blue as neutral return and green as ground or earth.

It is critical that the combined total amperage of the spot lights is less than the breaker amperage or the breaker will blow each time you switch the lights on.  It is also essential that the light unit's ground wire is securely attached to the ceiling metal box.

Make sure before closing everything up that all spliced conductors (wires) are securely joined (the code book will tell you how to use connectors etc.)

I hope this helps. The following should be bold and in red but I don't know how to do that!!

PLEASE RE-READ THE FIRST ADVICE AND CONDUCT (ugh!) YOURSELF ACCORD(ANOTHER PUN!)INGLY.

    Cheers, jenni.

  5. if you dont know then pay an electrician

  6. Plain Black to Blue

    Black (with red) to brown

Plain reds together (not connected to light fitting)

green & yellow from ceiling to light.

  7. Go with Pauline and Nicklin's answers.  They are correct.

Also good advice (if a little long) from Jenni.

Please be aware electricity kills very easily.  Don't mess with it unless you know what you are doing.

If in doubt always consult a qualified electrician - isn't your life worth far more than what an electrician would charge to do this for you?

  8. Easiest way is to look that the wiring diagram, or electrical schematic.  Unfortunately not everything is made easy in the electrical field.  But the sure way for me has always been to check the light or device itself to see what it requires and where.  By the way... electricians call earth... the green or bare wire... ground.  More specifically an equipment ground in basic branch circuits.

  9. Brown is red blue is black.

  10. USING CONNECTOR BLOCKS-CONNECT THE 2 RED WIRES.CONNECT THE SINGLE BLACK TO THE BLUE WIRE.CONNECT THE BLACK/RED SLEEVED WIRE TO THE BROWN WIRE.CONNECT YELLOW/GREEN-EARTH WIRES.TAPE UP CONNECTOR BLOCKS.TURN OFF LIGHTING CIRCUITS BEFORE YOU START!
