Could Dinara Safina, who continues to battle back problems and is not playing in Indian Wells, be knocked out of the No. 2 spot at the end of the tournament?

It’s possible. Safina will drop 250 ranking points at the end of the tournament, where she reached the quarter-finals in 2009, to sit at 6230 points. If current world No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki (current points 5925), also a quarter-finalist last year, wins the tournament then she will add enough points to her total to leapfrog both third ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova and Safina and move into the No. 2 spot.
