New world number one Lee Westwood dreaming of first major championship – Golf news
New world number one Lee Westwood is on a role winning his second tournament in two weeks and is looking forward to winning his first major championship.
Westwood has been subject of criticism as he has claimed the number one rank twice and never won a major. Now being in decent form, he is doing anything he can to prepare for the challenge. With the US Open taking place in Maryland in June 2011, Westwood
is hoping to do well in the tournament.
“My next goal is to win a Major championship. It's the dream of all professional golfers to get to number one in the world rankings, and I've done that,” said Westwood. “I haven't won a Major yet and that's the missing thing, so that's what I gear all my
practice towards and my scheduling.”
The Englishman posted an amazing final round score of 67 to win the $3.2-million Ballantine’s Championship by one stroke. Westwood’s victory over Spanish player Miguel Angel Jimenez secured his position at the summit of world rankings once again. With the
second major nearby, these wins have surely boosted the Englishman’s confidence.
Winning the Indonesian Masters last weekend, Westwood displaced the German Martin Kaymer as highest ranked golfer in the world. This is the second time Westwood has dethroned another golfer from the top rank. Kaymer displaced the Englishman when he reached
the finals of the Accenture Match Play Championships in February 2011. Westwood needed to finish in top five to stop Kaymer from taking his rank once again. Making a 12 under par overall for the tournament, Westwood birdied the final hole in style and emerged
victorious.
In the final round, Westwood moved up four places, as he posted a five under par in the last round. He then started on the back-nine and made a birdie on the fourth hole. Making another birdie on the eighth hole, he was in a decent position when making the
turn. Westwood was truly amazing at the back-nine. He made two back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th. He finished with a bang as he birdied his last hole of the tournament.
