Ok im doing a project for my world regions class and part of it is about new zealand cuisines..

I cant find hardly anything! I have to do Australia too, so some of them are the same and I need more unique things! I have so the pavlava desert, colonial goose, the biscuits, lamington cakes... but i need more! Anyone from New Zealand want to give me some input? If you just give me a name, I can do all the research on it!

  1. Shansmum has no idea. We do actually eat roo and emu here

  2. Some of the more unique Australian foods are meats like crocodile, emu and kangaroo - you can buy meat pies from our local pie shop in these flavours.  The Aboriginals also eat turtle, snake and goanna.

There are also many bush foods like various berries, witchety grubs and green ants.

New Zealanders love to Hungi.  The Hungi is a very public event, where a large pit it dug and a fire is made in the pit.  Various meats and vegetables are put into the pit, and the feast is then shared.

They also eat cassava, which is a root vegetable a bit like yam.

As someone else has already mentioned Lamb features heavily, as does fish

  3. One thing I can tell you re food and NZ and that is the Kiwi's know how to smoke fish. It doesn't go orange like the stuff you can buy from Africa in the supermarkets. Its a lovely light brown colouring and extremely yummy, so if you ever go to NZ, try the smoked fish.

  4. Whitebait fritters are a New Zealand food. They're tiny, tiny whole fish made into fritters. Kiwis also eat kumera which is a type of orange coloured sweet potato and their large green-lipped mussels are a great delicacy.

Oh, and it's pavlova dessert and lamingtons are just that - lamingtons, not lamington cakes. Pavlova is actually Australian but Kiwis always deny this and claim it for themselves.

Don't believe people when they talk about kangaroo, emu, crocodile etc as Australian food. The meats are available, but regular Australians never eat them.

Alison and simon Holst are very well known Experts on cooking in New Zealand. Lamb is always well known as such a lot of it there. And the maoris are known for their hangis. A favourite New Zealand cook book is The Edmonds one most homes have it. When I was little I loved hearing Aunt Daisy come on the radio  at 9 am. Then I would know I didn't have to go to school that day. She had a cook book out that was also full of hints. For Australia you may want to know about Damper. What people cook out doors in a dutch oven on the fire and bush tucker. As for the Pavalova there is always a bit of rivalry over who claims it's theirs between NZ and Australiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damper_(foo...
