  1. I went to New Zealand from the USA in 1987. I met a NZ guy, we married, and busted up in 1993. I went through the whole procedure of a work permit and permanent residency. It was hard because I was not child bearing age and did not have an occupation that  a New Zealander couldn't do as well or better. I wanted to do it on my own without marrying my fiance until I had at least gotten a work permit. Finally after months and months, I dragged my fiance to the immigration office out  of Pakuranga, I believe, and discovered that if I paid a fee, my application could be expedited. Back then it cost $50 NZD. If I remember right, once I got a work permit, I was eligible for Permanent Residency (pr) after a year.Try asking if they still have a way to pay and expedite your work permit application.

    Hope this helps!
