I have a 6 week old baby and when he sleeps he will breathe normal and then it gets reallyyy fast for a couple seconds. The doctors said it was normal when I asked about it when he was born, but shouldn't he have grown out of breathing like this by 6 weeks? I'm getting nervous that there;s something wrong with his breathing?

  1. It's normal.  My 8-week old's breathing is the same way.

  2. I'm guessing he's in REM sleep when he does it. Mine did it then. It is normal and will continue. For a while. To set your mind at ease try www.hubpages.com. they have a list of what is normal and abnormal breathing in an infant. When they speak of rapid breathing after the sleep breathing, it's an awake baby they're speaking of.

  3. it is very norma my baby was on a heart monitor when he was little and i would lay there at night and look at the lights and it would slow down and then speed up i would tell the dr they would look at the results and said it was perfectly normal

  4. scary but normal in newborns!  REM sleep - if concerned, call your doctor...otherwise, you will probably be like me and not sleep - I check on my baby CONSTANTLY!!
