Question:

Newborn Baby Shopping List?

by  |  earlier

I am only 16 weeks pregnant, but I'm trying to get a registry started. This is my first baby, so I really have no idea what to register for, and what are good brands, etc. So if anyone has enough time on their hands could you answer this question!? Make a list of the essentials for a newborn baby; ie) breast pump (brand), diaper genie, changing table, clothes (baby will be born during a blister cold month in Minnesota). Is a wipe warmer necessary? Is a bottle warmer necessary? What's the best way to give baby a bath? Are those boppy pillows helpful?

Just a few of my confused questions!!!!!

Thanks so much!

  1. I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my first so I don't speak from personal experience, but I've been working on my registries with my sister who has had 2 kids, and with the additional help of product reviews.

-Breast pump: Medela Pump in Style (unfortunately one of the more pricey ones but it's the best)... or if you don't intend to use it much something cheaper

-Boppy pillow - yes, and a couple of covers

-Clothing - you shouldn't have to register for too much since that's one of those things you'll get lots of anyway (I'm also told I'll get tons and tons of baby blankets so I've registered for one I really liked but that's it), but I put on a couple packs of onesies in 0-3 and 3-6 months, socks, and a Halo sleepsack (they have a fleece one for winter babies), and if you wanted to do a bundling outfit for trips to and from the car put that on there. It doesn't hurt to put some additional clothing on there so people can see your tastes but not everyone is going to buy off the registry anyway.

-A couple big boxes of diapers.

-safety items like car window shades, cabinet locks, outlet covers (I was told the Safety 1st Outlet Cover with Shortener... covers the whole outlet), simple first aid kit if you don't have one in the house, etc.

-bottles with additional nipples (and liners if applicable). I'm going for Playtex with the drop in liners because my sister liked them and has a few left she is handing down (and I'm planning on breastfeeding so I'd get the ventaire if I was formula feeding)

-two or 3 changing table covers and crib sheets. Newborns shouldn't have any blankets or squishy bumpers or anything in the crib with them so if you really want to go for the whole bedding set go for it, but you won't be able to have a picture perfect baby bed b/c the blanket will prob just be used as just another baby blanket. (by the way we got a changing table consignment but i still registered for a new curved pad for the top of it)

-something like the Price Lionheart Diaper Depot... something that attaches to the side of the changing table and holds things at the ready

-bottle drying rack (The First Years Spin Store Dry Rack Organizer was recommended to me)... and a bottle brush, etc.

    -baby moniters

    -nursing pads/accessories

    -diaper bag, travel changing pad

-fisher price high chair was recommended to me... I've got a rainforest patterned one on my registry

-swing, bouncer, gymboree, etc... i think it seems silly that there's all these things so pricey but apparently they get a lot of use so it's worth it.

-graco infant car seat or travel system, and then a convertible car seat for later on (I have Sunshine Kids Radian car seat in granite, good safety reviews)

-graco stroller (or travel system) so that the infant car seat can attach to the stroller. the patterns don't need to match or be part of a travel system to work together as long as it's both graco but I was told I should get one with cupholders for both me AND the baby and rubber (not plastic) wheels.

-pack and play. whether or not to get the bells and whistles, bassinet part, etc, is up to you. some swear by em some say they never used all the extra stuff, but pretty much everyone agreed that a pack and play was considered a necessity.

-infant or infant to toddler bathtub, good washcloths, hooded towel. generally terry cloth is more liked than the thin (and non absorbent) cotton ones.

wipe and bottle warmers not necessary but hey if you want to put em on there and someone wants to buy em for ya... I'm not bothering with a Diaper Genie because, well, it seems like a waste to me. The outside trash can isn't that far away so baby's room regular small trash can with a lid will prob have to be emptied every day but that's no big deal. as far as giving a baby a bath you can research that with a really quick yahoo search, and chances are they will even teach you at the hospital if you want once baby is born.

    Good luck! =)

  2. I haven't had my baby yet, but I have a spread sheet list of everything that I am getting (or already have) for my baby.  It took me a while to come up with it all and to get rid of un-needed things on the list.  If you email me at litlearnhardt8@aol.com I can send you the list.  As for the baby being born in a cold month you will want to make sure you have lots of warm cloths, socks, hats and sleepers, but also you will want a thick carrier cover and stroller cover for when you do have to take the baby out.  A wipe warmer and bottle warmer are not necessary, but I am getting them because I like the idea of them.  The baby bath I am not sure about I am still asking around about that, I think I plan on getting one of the tubs that you put inside the regular tub, and the one I like can also be used for when they are toddlers.  I have heard tons of good things about the boppy pillow, everyone I talked to says to get it.

Here are some of the questions about baby items (yea there are a lot) that I have asked on here before so you can see what others said:

  3. Sounds like you have a pretty good list going so far.  You may also want to get a Babybjorn Baby Carrier

  4. Since this is your first baby go for the big list of items on your registry! Mostly you need everything. You have no previous items since this is your first child. When doing your list make sure to add all those items your not sure about and the ones you know for sure you want. Heres a list of thing I made for my registry:

Bottles ( Get the type for whether you will be breastfeeding or not. If you are breastfeeding advent looked like a good brand. This is important because the nipples are designed different.)

    Basenet

Burp cloths ( lots of them)

baby blankets ( lots of them)

    Baby bedding for the crib

    diapers

    wipes

    onesies

car seat ( a must, many different types now, get the one that works best for your needs)

    stroller

baby cloths (newborn, 0-3 months, and 0-6 months to help you out having things longer)

    Changing table

baby bed (look to see if you want a regular baby bed or a convertible. the convertible beds change to fit your baby's growing needs, I have herd these bed break when put into toddler bed position)

    Baby rocker

    Bouncy chair

    Fun on the floor mat

    A baby bath

warmer (its nice but not needed, depends on if you want one and if you like how they work)

Diaper genies ( I have been told are to expensive in the long run and more work then needed)

    Binkies

last anything you want and think you might need. As a new mom you may find you like things other moms don't. You may even find that items that were highly recommended don't fit your needs. So just have fun and make that list as long as you want. Your family will also know for sure what you need and don't so they will be able to easily navigate your list. Have fun and congrats on the new baby!
