Question:

Newborn Kitten - Wetting Themselves?

I am currently fostering three 8-10 day old kittens. They seem to be excessively wetting themselves. Every few hours, their back ends are soaked and it smells of urine. Anyone experience this and have any ideas why this is happening? I stimulate them after every feeding but it seems they're doing a fine job themselves. They just seem to young to be able to normally go on their own.

  1. I would continue to stimulate them..

And wash their bodies.. and dry. like mom would!

Put something under them that will obsorb the urine... you really don't want the kittens smelling of urine.

There are pads that you can get that are just for trapping urine... they are large and usually you can get them at a pharmacy.

    good luck .

  2. my guess is the the other kittens in the litter are rubbing the bellies and since the mom isnt there to l**k the pee that they just pee and it stays on them.

  3. That is young!  I still had to stimulate stray kittens at 3 weeks.  I would call a vet.

  4. What goes in one end has to come out the other.  In the absence of the mother cat who always cleans them, this is normal.  Try placing them on baby diapers.  A little harmless baking soda may take some of the odor away.  You may need to take a warm terry cloth and wipe their rears very gently.

I've raised a lot of tiny newborn kittens in my days, and these are some of the methods I've used.  They will not be able to use the litter pan till they are scampering around.  For now, you need to treat them as if they were human infants that can't walk yet.

Since they are your foster kitties, I'll give you little hint that a vet gave me.  When they are ready to be weaned off milk, use Gerber baby food like lamb and rice, mix it with softened dry kitten food.  They will learn to eat fast.  Mine did not get weaned from the KMR in kitten bottles till they were about a month old.
