My 4-day old son was eating every 2 hours for approximately 20-30min, while in the hospital. He's recently taken to eating for 5min every half hour or so. he's getting the same amount of food, but how can I get him back to the every 2hrs routine, without much crying? what are good ways to keep baby alert and wanting to feed, while on the breast?

  1. My baby was bad about falling asleep at the breast, he is just now getting better (he's 3 weeks). I just woke him up every time he fell asleep and got him to eat more. Sometimes I would have to completely undress him and just kinda tickle him and talk to him. Tickling his feet and back usally did the trick. Sometimes it would take about an hour to feed him, i just kept waking him up till he refused my breast while he was awake. Stick to it, it gets easier! Grats on the new baby!!!

  2. My son was definitely a Godsend, the only thing was he did that too! I would feed him and 5-10 mins later he would be asleep and not want any milk for a little bit! I felt like I was sitting around just to feed him. I got some advice that while he is eating strip him down. Just his diaper and onesie. Also try stroking the bottom of his foot- most newborns hate that. Feed him and keep stimulating and burping him. I also decided I was not going to be my son's pacifier and he needed to eat when time came. It is early for discipline but it is a good habit to get both of you in.

  3. i had trouble getting my child to stay awake during feedings.  What was recommended and worked for me was keeping her in only her diaper while feeding. just put a receiving blanket over to protect your son.  you could also keep a damp cloth nearby to wake your son if he falls asleep during feeding. just rub it on the bottom of his feet or his back.

this was a result of jaundice on my daughter. it might be the same for you, so keep an eye out and if it gets worse talk to the pediatrician.
