Newborn hiccups! Any ideas?

Hi - our baby is 2 weeks old and he seems to always get the hiccups, when he does it's usually an hour or so after feeding. He doesn't cry through them, but they come so often when he does get them (like a hiccup every few seconds) and I feel horrible for him! Any ideas on how to relieve them or keep them from coming at all? Thank you!!

  1. My daughter got them all the time while I was pregnant with her.  Then after she was born she got them right away.  As she got older they started to stop and now at 8 months gets them once in awhile.  Its normal for babies to get hiccups, if it gets to bad just give him a few sips of formula/breast milk if your worried.

  2. Don't worry - its not hurting him - my son had them all the time too when he was just a baby but they eventually grow out of it.

The following is an excerpt from an article (from http://www.burpingbaby.net/baby_hiccups.... which may help ease your mind: -

"During the first few months you can be sure that your baby will hiccup at regular intervals, particularly when he/she gets excited or just after a feed. This is quite normal and is nothing to be unduly alarmed about. Hiccups are just one of the many normal behaviours and reflexes that are common for newborn babies that parents (particularly first time parents) need to be aware of and get used to. In fact, chances are that the mother even felt the baby hiccup from time to time while still in the womb. Indeed, studies have revealed that hiccups can start as early as the 6th week after actual conception! ..."

  3. hiccups are very common and usually bother you more than baby, usually they are harmless and he will eventually grow out of them...keep in mind though if baby has tummy troubles, they can be a possible sign of reflux...

  4. Our pediatrician told us that the only problem with "normal" hiccups is that they are annoying.  If they get awfully hard, cause vomitting, or never go away, that could be an issue.  The best way to get rid of them for a baby is to get the baby to swallow.  You can do this by feeding or giving the baby a pacifier.  The swallowing will stop the hiccups if they become bothersome to your baby.

  5. I don't know of anyways to make them go away but new born babies always have hiccups.

  6. just offer a few more sips from the breast... tho it is commom and soothing to them..the breast usually gets rid of them...congrats too...
