I have a newborn kitten, 9 days old, and while it sleeps, it shakes...is this normal? Also, it's eyes open a little bit and you can see them rolling around..it's strange. Any experience with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated..we just lost the other baby to fading kitten syndrome yesterday and we don't want to lose this one ):

  1. DONT WAIT TAKE IT TO A VET CATS AND KITTENS THAT DO THAT MEANS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG AND IT MIGHT LEAD TO IT DIEING. I HAVE RASIED CATS ALL MY LIFE I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT GET IT TO THE VET.....................................

  2. may be cold, or dreaming when really young the stuff they dream about you can only imagine cats shake and move when they dream but if you lost a kitten to fks already you may want to take to a vet if that kitten was doing the shaking thing too

  3. My great-grandma's stray cat had kittens a few months ago. *if you want to see what they look like, go to my page and click on my catster website. :)*

    Anyway, sometimes, they do that.

OMJ, POOR BABY!! I've heard that is awful. :(

Umm, about the rolling eyes part....sometimes mine (well, my great grandma's ;) ) did that.

9 days old and his/her eyes are already open? WOW.

Mine opened at like 12 days. Tehe.

    ~Hope I helped!!!~

  4. you should not be spending so much time with a 9 day old, you will stress mom, mom will leave.

kitty is probably cold, it needs mom for body heat. mom should not be with her often, she should be with her for about 23 hours a day for about the first two weeks. if mom leaves for several hours, it is probably freezing to death.

put a heating pad,(on low, we are not trying to cook it) under a towel in a box. only cover half the box with the heating pad so kitty can crawl off if he gets too warm. that wil fix the heat problem.

stop handling the kitten. put it in a dark secluded place. closet or under a bed. check on it, but do not handle it. dont spend more then a minute at a time with it. mom needs to be alone with it.

that will fix the mom leaving the kitten alone problem

the eyes. i have never handled a new born long enough to notice the eyes. i would guess, since kittens can not see when the eyes first open, then can not focus until they are about 4 weeks old, everything is blurry and strange and he keeps trying to see.

  5. its shaking because it has just learned to use its muscles, and its stress for the whole body. Its eyes will open when its 2 weeks old so you can wait until they are both open.

  6. I know it seems obvious, but she might just be cold. Is the mother with the kitten often? Because it will rely on her bodyheat for the first two weeks. Your house should be about 80 degrees, especially if the mother is neglecting the kitten. I think the eyes should be open within two weeks as well. If there is no improvement from now to then, I would see a vet, though.

Here is some good information I found:

"For the first several weeks, kittens are unable to urinate or defecate without being stimulated by their mother. They are also unable to regulate their body temperature for the first three weeks, so kittens born in temperatures less than 27 °C (80 °F) can die from exposure if they are not kept warm by their mother. The mother's milk is very important for the kittens' nutrition and proper growth; so if possible, the kitten should not be taken from their mother for at least 5 to 6 weeks after birth. This milk transfers antibodies to the kittens, which helps protect them against infectious disease. Newborn kittens are also unable to produce concentrated urine, so have a very high requirement for fluids.

Kittens open their eyes about seven to ten days following birth. At first, the retina is poorly-developed and vision is poor. Kittens are not able to see as well as adult cats until about ten weeks after birth."

  7. Sounds like it might have a neurological problem.  Nothing you can do but wait.  Lost an entire litter to fading kitten syndrome in May.  Can relate.  Love them while you have them.
