Newborn on hyoscyamine sulfate (Levsin) not working?

I had to take my newborn to the doc when he was two weeks old b/c he was extremely gassy and constipated--he wouldn't stop crying for almost 24 hrs! The doctor told us he might be colicky, which we don't think he is b/c he only gets this upset when he's really gassy and backed up. We switched to a soy formula (Enfamil Pro Soybee) and were prescribed gas drops--hyoscyamine sulfate. The problem is the drops made him so tired and lethargic that we had to take him off them and only give them to him when he gets really gassy. We've had to give them to him the last two nights and it's helped with the gas but I think the drops make him even more constipated. We've been putting some dark Karo syrup in his bottles, but even that's not working. Should we try to switch formulas again? His father was allergic to both milk and soy as a baby, but the doctor just says to give him suppositories a couple times a week, which I don't want to do! I feel terrible that my child is in pain and don't know what to do about it.

  1. The Dr gave you something to do about it, but you don't want to!

  2. It's been nearly five years since we had that problem, but...I say stick to the formula, and use the suppositories if he's still not doing regularly.
