Question:

Newborns head is lop sided?

My son is 6 wks old today. I noticed soon after birth that his head is lop sided. The back of his head almost goes to a slant. The left side doesn't seem to look as normal as the right side. I did notice that he always puts his head to the left side. I'm not sure if I should worry or if this will eventually maybe fix itself. I do know of some children having to wear helmets to shape their heads. I guess I'm just paranoid, he seems normal otherwise. He has seen the doctor a few times since birth and she has never once mentioned it or seemed worried. Maybe I should bring it up?

  1. MAKE SURE that the "soft spot" on the top of his head did not get fused together during birth.  My friends child had this condition and his head was completely lopsided and he had a surgery done to remove the bone to allow his brain to expand.  (Everything turned out OK!)

I am not trying to worry you but just check and see if the soft spot area is normal!

    Good luck mom!

  2. I had this problem with my daughter but the doctor never said anything about a helmet. I think it has to be pretty flat for them to suggest that.

My daughter did prefer one side to the other, even if I layed her the other way! Since your son is still little enough I would suggest getting a positioning wedge to lay him on his other side for a while. At least then both sides would match!

Luckily my daughters head isn't really flat anymore but if it was it'd be ok since she's a girl and will have long hair to cover it! Just mention it at the next appointment, the doctor probably isn't too concerned yet.

    Good luck

  3. If you're concerned, I would certainly bring it up at the doctor.  Lots of kids have misshapen heads, but some do require helmets.  Ask at your 2 mo. appointment.

  4. you have to shape it subtlety and also dont let them sleep on one side too long you have too move them or it will harden and stay like that, you can ask a doc for tips or ask an older person who already had kids b4

  5. this is very common in babies. their heads are soft, and so when you push them out during labor, it molds their heads. it usually goes away on its own as the baby gets older and the head begins to harden more. if you have any concerns, its always best to give your doctor a call about it.

  6. one thing to learn, is always bring up any concerns you have first thing at doctors appt. there not always going to notice things that you do.
