Newcastle Falcons destined for the drop – Rugby News Update
Newcastle Falcons won their game against the London Wasps but they could still be relegated to the Championship ahead of the new season. The game Adams Park, Wycombe on Saturday, 5th May, ended London Wasps 10 – 14 Newcastle Falcons.
A stunning comeback saw the Falcons clinch victory. They were losing by ten points at the end of the first half but the players pulled their socks up and managed a successful victory from a losing position but it was not enough to secure their survival.
However, they are now dependant on the outcome of the Championship title race, which will conclude on the 30th of May.
Bristol, London Welsh, Bedford and Cornish Pirates are all contesting to win silverware but amongst these four teams, Bristol is the only team that meets the Premiership’s criteria for playing in the top tier of English club rugby.
The interim coach of the Falcons, Gary Gold, was naturally disappointed, as he feels that he will hand the team to a coach who will have to fight his way back into the Premiership, though he did praise his players for the fight that they showed.
While speaking about the game and the future he said, "We were fighting for our lives. At 10-0 down there was perhaps a reason to give up, but the players didn't. They are a great bunch of guys who were up for the fight. My goal when I came to Newcastle
was to keep them in the Premiership. I couldn't control the consequences today.”
Gold will be handing the reins of the team to Dean Richards who returns after a three-year worldwide coaching ban, which ends this summer following the Bloodgate saga. However, the former England player has the experience and he was able to bring the Harlequins
back to the Premiership in 2006, and Gold feels that he can do that again with Newcastle.
Gold spoke about his own future and he said, “I am going home [to South Africa] tomorrow, and I have some options to consider. We had to throw the kitchen sink at it today, but we had the belief we could do it.”
