Newcastle Falcons hoping for a great escape – Rugby News Update
Round 22 of the Aviva Premiership sees the Gary Gold led Newcastle Falcons travelling to London Wasps, to play an important fixture, which will determine the fate of the team from the north-east.
Speaking ahead of the match, the director of rugby Gold said, "It is about a group of guys who have not been given a chance to stay up - it is the essence of rugby, and anything is possible. I have just been blown away by the attitude that the players have
shown on the field and how knowledgeable they are of the game.”
Newcastle has struggled throughout the Premiership season and their battle to stay up has gone to the wire. If they win by a 24 point margin at Adams Park against their London rival without conceding a bonus losing point, will seal the deal for them. However,
it is going to be difficult for the team from the north-east, with Gold admitting that if the Falcons can avoid the drop-down, it will be his biggest career achievement.
Gold has been in a buoyant mood to make sure that his team travels to London in good spirits. He wants to keep the confidence of his players high, giving them his public backing, by saying, "They have really responded to fighting for Premiership survival,
and we have certainly been improving week in and week out. That is the reason why we have been able to go toe to toe with the top teams in the Premiership.”
He also added that it is going to be a pressure situation but they can achieve a result, if the players show belief and think that they can win.
However, the odds are stacked against them. Their biggest victory of the season was by 9 points against Gloucester last month, but they will need to better that against the Wasps. They will have an unchanged side for the game, with Jimmy Gopperth , who signed
a three-year deal recently playing alongside the Irish international Peter Stringer at halfback.
It will be an intriguing game with all to play for.
