Newcastle Falcons sign Rory Lawson – Rugby News Update
Rory Lawson, the 31-year-old scrum-half has switched teams, moving from Gloucester to Newcastle, penning a two year deal with the club.
Even though Newcastle finished bottom of the Aviva Premiership, Lawson still believes that the team has a bright future. Speaking about his move, he said, "I'm really looking forward to joining up with the Falcons this summer. Newcastle's form towards the
end of the season was strong and there is a lot we can build upon for next year to move the club forward.”
Newcastle’s future is uncertain at the moment. Having finished bottom of the Premiership, they are reliant on the Championship final between London Welsh and Pirates to determine their future. If London Welsh wins the final, they can be promoted but there
are certain minimum standards that they have to adhere too. However, the Pirates will stay in the Championship regardless of winning or losing the final.
Lawson met the Chairman of Newcastle and he was very pleased to learn that the club wants to go places. He said, "Having met with (club owner) Semore Kurdi it is clear that the Falcons have significant resource and intent to build a successful club in the
north-east, and the appointment of Dean Richards can only enhance that."
Dean Richards has been appointed the coach of the Falcons after being banned from coaching for using fake blood to force a substitution in a Heineken Cup game. Besides this blot on his professional career, his record as a coach is second to none.
Rory, like his father Alan, took over the Scotland scrum-half jersey in 2006 when he made his debut against Australia at Murrayfield, on November 25, 2006. He was included in the Scotland squad for the 2007 Six Nations tournament, and played at the World
Cup later that year. In an international career that has spanned 6 years; he has only made 30 appearances for Scotland, starting 12 of those games, while coming on as a substitute a further 18 times.
The Falcons have signed a good scrum-half in Lawson, who will take the team to the next step.
