Newcastle United hosted Wigan Athletic at St. James’ Park last night in the Premier League. Without a win in their last 7 games and fresh from a 4-game losing streak, the Magpies badly needed a result as they took on the Latics.
The pressure was building on manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew, who admitted last week that if his side’s bad run continued, they would have to face a battle to stay in the Premier League. His comments painted a contrasting picture to the start of the season, where Newcastle were favourites to finish in the top 4 after last season’s impressive 5th place finish.
The Magpies were awarded a 12th minute penalty which Demba Ba converted coolly. Wigan’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maynor-Figueroa-c25071 had been sent off, and the home side took full advantage of the Wigan’s handicap. Demba later added another goal, which was followed by Gael Bigirimana’s second half wonder strike.
Tim Krul – 5
The Dutchman had little to do all evening as the hosts dominated proceedings. He looked a bit nervy dealing with a couple of crosses, but overall had a decent game.
Fabricio Coloccini – 8
The club skipper had another solid game, though he was caught in possession far too often. The Argentine was otherwise calm and composed, and dealt with the Wigan attack comfortably.

The Italian full back had a good game at both ends of the pitch. He drove forward with purpose and assisted the second goal as Wigan keeper Al-Habsi failed to deal with his long range effort which Ba slotted home on the rebound.

The right-back looked a bit tired, and often left space at the back whenever he went forward. He however recovered well and was solid enough to help his side keep a clean sheet.
Mike Williamson – 7
Williamson struggled in the early stages of the game and was slow compared with Kone and Di Santo, who caused a couple of nervy moments.

The Dutchman put in one of his finest performances in a Newcastle jersey. He attacked with intent and displayed his quick passing and hold-up play. He replaced Tiote in the holding midfield position in the second half.

The Argentine played on the left wing but spent most of his time playing deep within his own half. His first touch was poor, and he struggled to make an impact.

The Frenchman put in an impressive and neat performance in the centre of midfield, and was involved in most of Newcastle’s attacks. He displayed his dribbling and passing skills to great effect.
Tiote – 8
The Ivorian was solid as always, and took several shots at goal. He was calm in possession and tackled well, breaking up opposition play as often as he could. He was taken off at the break after experiencing a knock.
Papiss Cisse – 8
The Senegalese striker won the penalty that led to Newcastle’s first goal. He looked uncomfortable in a wide role, but worked hard and looked menacing at times. He was however not as clinical as he would’ve liked to be, and wasted a couple of opportunities.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Demba-Ba-c10812 – 9
The striker had his finest performance of the season so far. Ba demonstrated his exquisite first touch and strength, and held the ball well for his teammates. He scored a brace and continues to be a major player for the team.
Gael Bigirimana – 9
The youngster replaced Tiote at half time, and scored the best goal of the night as he curled home a shot right outside the box. He was lively and energetic and looks like a bright prospect for the club.
