Newcastle United boss hails supporters
Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has praised the English Premier League club’s fans for their strong level of support.
The club’s supporters are renowned for being among the most passionate of any club in the country. Their vocal backing helped their side to gain promotion back from the Football League Championship at the first time of asking last season.
That passion was tested in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Stoke City at St James’ Park (which had a crowd of 41,915). Hughton took the time to voice his appreciation of the fans’ attempts to spur his players into improving their performances.
He told BBC Newcastle on Monday that he hoped that level of support would continue. He said that, “On a disappointing afternoon, the support was very good. We are going to need that, because there will be even tougher games."
Impressive wins
An uneven start to Newcastle’s return to the top-flight has seen them notch up victories over regular top-six finishers Aston Villa and Everton. They also gained a win in the Carling Cup over reigning EPL champions Chelsea last week. However, those impressive
wins were mitigated by defeats to Blackpool and Stoke.
Those results have left Newcastle in tenth place in the table, three points away from fifth spot, but just two points above the relegation zone in what has been a very tight start to the new campaign.
As a result, Hughton has called on the fans to limit their expectations for this season. “We're a side that has just been promoted. What we've got to be able to do is bounce back from these bad results. There are going to be lots of ups and downs this season."
