Newcastle United boss says Andy Carroll was not given good enough service on England debut
Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton claims that his striker Andy Carroll did not receive good enough service from his team-mates on his England debut.
The 21-year-old made his senior international debut in a friendly game against France at Wembley on Wednesday 17 November. While the forward played well in keeping possession, he could not get his name on to the scoresheet and England eventually fell 2-1 as
a result of goals by Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena. Tottenham Hotspur's Peter Crouch was the man who netted for the home side.
The most important outcome for Hughton was that the striker came through the match unscathed after his participation was put in doubt following a groin injury sustained in the 0-0 English Premier League draw with Fulham on Saturday 13 November.
However, the Magpies boss was disappointed that the England midfielders did not provide Carroll with the service required for him to mark his first England cap with a debut goal.
He told the Jarrow and Hebburn Gazette that: "I'm delighted for Andy. But in some ways, it was a difficult night for him. He wouldn't have got the type of service in the box to give him the opportunities to score goals, but I thought he did well. He kept possession
quite well, and I think he would have been happy.
"We'll assess him, and it looks like he'll be okay at the moment (for the EPL game against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday 13 November). We were aware of the problem he had, he injured his groin at the weekend. There was a concern, but what he did do was make
a good enough recovery over two or three days to be available for the England game.”
