Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll targets Partnership with Wayne Rooney
Newcastle striker, Andy Carroll is keen to partner Manchester United frontman Wayne Rooney in the England jersey. Moreover, he would like to abolish his bad boy image and follow the footsteps of England great Alan Shearer.
Carroll has been in rich form this season scoring 9 goals so far and now, he is aiming high to become the best player he can be. However, the 21-year-old has been involved in number of controversies including a s*x scandal and
appeared in court several times on charge of physically abusing his girlfriend.
In spite of all these controversies, England coach Fabio Capello handed him England start in the recent friendly match against France, which ended in 2-1 defeat at Wembley for the home team.
Carroll believes that Shearer was his hero, considers him an absolute legend and his aim is to follow his dream, which is to become like Shearer.
He admits that some unfortunate incidents have tarnished his reputation lately, but has vowed to move forward and forget about these things. He understands that from now on he will be under the microscope and will be watched by
everyone so he must keep his head down.
The Newcastle striker also desires to be paired with the Rooney. The United forward has recently returned from injury and showed his best form so far this season in the 7-1 demolition of Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Talking about his England teammate Rooney, he considers him among the greatest and if he can form a partnership with the United star then it would mean a lot to him. The way both men play will definitely suit each other especially
if Rooney plays off him.
Carroll said, "I knew I was capable of playing for England. It feels good getting a cap but I'm not really surprised because I wanted to do that. I knew I could do it and that was my target. It's great to get into the team but
now I have to try to keep my place in the squad. But if I carry on doing what I'm doing, I don't see why I can't be first choice.”
The striker also praised England manager Capello for encouraging him. The Italian gave him lot of belief and self-confidence by saying that he must carry on the good work.
He added, “I don't really get nervous. I know it was a big game for me, with a lot of people watching, but it's just football. It's what I'm good at doing. I turned up at the England hotel and went in like I should be there. Nothing
really fazes me. I don't really worry about anything. I just get on with things.''
The emergence of Carroll on the field will prove to be great for England if his partnership with Rooney clicks. The young striker has also shown that he has the ability to play upfront on his own; if Rooney is unavailable it will
give Capello another option to play him as a lone striker.
