Newcastle United striker demands home improvement
Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has insisted that the English Premier League club must address a poor run of home form which has seen them pick up just one point from their last three games at St James’ Park.
The North East side narrowly avoided their third home defeat in a row when Fabricio Coloccini popped up to head home an equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic on Saturday, 16 October.
Newcastle have not been beaten at home three times in succession since the 2008-09 season, a campaign which saw them ending up being relegated to the Football League Championship. They made up for that poor run in 2009-10, where they were unbeaten at St
James’ all season.
Now, Ameobi has called for his team-mates to display a greater defensive strength if they are to finish the current campaign in a comfortable position.
'Three straight home losses would have been difficult'
He told the BBC that: "Going down to three straight home defeats would have been difficult to swallow. The majority of our points have to come at home this season. Going into the season we understood we would not go through it without disappointments like
we did last season.
"But at home we expect to be picking up points. At times we make it tough for ourselves but we have got that spirit and we have to believe in ourselves. Even when we're not playing well we have to show those fighting qualities that Chris (Hughton) expects
from us."
Newcastle’s next chance to pick up three points at home will come in the game they will be most desperate to win of all this season — the Tyneside derby against fierce rivals Sunderland on 31 October. Following that, their next home game will be against
Blackburn Rovers on 10 November.
