Newcastle United tell England not to play Andy Carroll

Newcastle United have told the Football Association they don’t want Andy Carroll to play for England tonight.

The striker has been plagued by a groin injury he picked up whilst playing for the Magpies in the goalless draw with Fulham at the weekend.

England manager Fabio Capello gave him his first senior call-up after that game, and said yesterday he was going to start the game against France at Wembley, but Newcastle have said they don’t want him to play.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has reportedly said if his team were in action tonight he wouldn’t even make the bench. Newcastle’s doctor has also said he is not fit to play, whilst England’s doctor has cleared him.

Carroll missed training on Monday but came through a session yesterday. He is desperate to make his debut for his country, but Newcastle fear if he plays he could aggravate the injury and have a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
