The Magpies have been linked with FC Twente Enschede’s Douglas for quite some time and have now turned their attention towards the Eredivisie champions’ defender.
Reports in English and Dutch media indicate that Newcastle United are taking keen interest in signing Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toby-Alderweireld-c35183, this summer.
The Magpies, who finished fifth on the English Premier League table, are in search of a quality central defender, as the club want to tighten up its defensive line.
Earlier reports indicated that the Toon are looking to acquire the services of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Douglas-c11600, before the start of the 2012/13 campaign.
However, when the English Premier League outfit came to know that the Tukkers have an option to extend the 24-year-old’s contract for another season, the Magpies started looking for alternatives and see Alderweireld as a perfect
addition.
The Belgian stopper, who has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since the summer of 2008, has been performing solid as a rock at the back for the past couple of seasons. He formed a strong partnership with his fellow compatriot,
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, and played an integral role in his side’s Eredivisie triumph.
The 23-year-old, who has thus far represented his national side in 16 matches since making his debut in 2009, has donned the Amsterdammers jersey in 79 Eredivisie games while adding his name to the score-sheet five times.
Apart from his consistent performances at the back, the highly-rated central defender has a tendency of playing high up on the pitch. The Belgian International has an extremely lethal right foot, and has scored screamers many a
times.
Alderweireld has an ongoing contract with Ajax that runs until the end of the 2014. Reports suggest that the Amsterdammers management would not let go of their prized asset in the upcoming summer transfer market. However, an offer
in the region of 10 million Euros could prove to be a too tempting bid to turn down.
Vertonghen, however, seems certain to leave the Eredivisie champions this summer to ply his trade with one of the European elites.
