Newcastle favourites lead the pack
Race favourites took two out of three A2 races, and the only A1 race on the card yesterday, in what turned out to be a predictable day at Newcastle, with favourites winning a total of nine races.
Unlocked, the 2-1 race favourite in the first A2 race of the day, not only failed to win, but took fourth by a shoulder behind Windy Gap. Instead, it was Lil Joker running wide from the sixth trap who took a late lead on his way to a ½ length victory over Smooth Fawn. Gap, who ended up in third, had the lead after the second bend, but as the pack entered the fourth bend, they tightened up, allowing Joker to make his move from the outside. Behind Unlocked, in fourth, was Wine and Flossie in fifth, and in sixth was Mineola Avoca.
Raisby Boy, the 6-4 race favourite, won the second A2 race of the day. It was close in the early stages of the race, with Vicarage Moment getting the best start of the group, but Boy was able to take the lead on the second bend and stretch it considerably. He ended up with a 2 ¼ length finish over second place Georgie Blue, and a huge 9 ½ length finish over third place, Son of Goblin. Vicarage ended way back in fifth behind Laverick Limmo. Penny Papyrus finished last.
It was Ultra Jerry Cool winning the last A2 race of the day by 1 ¼ lengths over Baby Nuggs. The 2-1 race favourite took an early lead and had no difficulty keeping ahead of the pack to win. Nuggs, a 12-1 longshot, surprised the crowd by taking second place over Witches Cherry by a shoulder. Right behind Cherry, by another shoulder, was Pond Tuscany in fourth. Ballinclare Oak took fifth and Centaur Global placed sixth.
The only A1 race on the card yesterday featured 2-1 race favourite, Ceili Ted, but it was Wraysburypandora who took the early lead from trap two after getting the best start of the group. Ted was close behind, coming from trap three, and by the second bend he was in front. Ted cruised to a 4 ¼ victory while Wraysburypandora fell back to fifth. Behind Ted in second was Berryhill Bomber, and 1 ½ lengths behind him, in third, was Frosty Cool. Black Nun took fourth place while Elwick Charm finished well behind in last place, after getting knocked over.
