Have you ever been to Newgrange in Ireland?

If so, what were you feelings when you entered the passage tomb?

I've been there and it was great!

I'll go back on my next holiday in Ireland.

Have you ever been in there on 21st December?

So lucky? ... ;-)

Ciao from Italy

  1. I Live Near The Newgrange And In The summer and winter solstuce the sun and moon comes directly over the tomb and fills the whole chamber full of light here is a webiste that Might help

  2. Yes. I felt in awe when I entered the passage tomb because I know how old it is, and that the people built it without heavy machinery.

There's waiting list 20 years long to be there for the Winter Solstice, I believe.

    Slan from Ireland.

  3. Never heard of it.

  4. I've been there but not on the solstice. We study it for art history, it's pretty spectacular. To go on the 21st of december you have to enter a lottery, one of my teachers has entered every year for more than ten years and she hasn't been chossen yet

  5. I have never been! I would absolutely love to go! Especially on the day when the sun passes through it, 21st December(you need to go on a list for that day only) My sister and my mam went and they said it was spectacular. I was too young to go, but I think we will be going this summer(hopefully!)

  6. No, but my brother loves it and I think he may have been there on 21st of december (day after my birthday)!

    Ciao from Northern Ireland

  7. I just went there recently and it is amazing. To think that they had the wits to design that centuries ago is fascinating. In order to be there for the winter solstice there is a lottery. I believe that it happens for 5 days and they can fit approximately 23 people in the tomb. They do a simulation of it when you visit though, which is still pretty incredible to see.

  8. I visited Newgrange several years ago- it was one of the only interesting things close enough to Dublin for me to visit- Next time I'll make it to the west coast and Giant's causeway :)

I was struck by how small the passage was, made me wonder how the builders managed.  Of course I wasn't there during winter solstice (lol, the waiting list for that is ridiculous) but it's amazing that without any form of mortar, the chamber has remained watertight after all this time.
