Newington overcome Masuk 3-2; Qualify for CIAC Class M Final – Volleyball news
Masuk High School boys volleyball team lost to Newington on Tuesday by 3-2 on the courts of the Oxford High School. Masuk lost its chance to be a part of the CIAC Class M Championship game as Newington confirmed their seat in the big game.
By the time that Newington had sealed the deal on Masuk, the score board showed the following final set scores: 19-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-14 and 17-15. As reflected by the set scores, Masuk played an impressive game in the first set and competed ferociously in the second one as well. However, after Newington came out strong in the third set of the game and was able to bag it, Masuk lost consistency and under performed in the fourth one. However, the fifth and final set of the match took on a competitive note and what followed was a thrilling competition between two well performing teams.
Megan Miller, the head coach of the Masuk team made the following comments about her team performance when the match had reached its close: “Unfortunately, we’ve had that problem all year. We play an amazing game, and then the next one it’s like we’re a completely different team. We played two amazing games, the third game ... I don’t know. We just weren’t that team.”
The first set of the game was dominated by Masuk from the start. They were able to take the lead early on and keep the pressure on Newington throughout the set. Despite attempts by Newington to break the momentum of their rivals, Masuk did not have a hard time winning on the opening set of the game at 25-19.
The loss of the first set by such a margin sent a wakeup call to Newington who was able to step up their game and rally together to give some tough competition to Masuk. With both the teams playing at their best, the second set of the game was a thrilling one to watch. No one was sure where the tables would turn until the final stages of the set. However, the second set was won by Masuk at 26-24 as well.
Masuk came close to making a clean sweep over Newington as the score remained close in the third set. However, Newington kept is cool and were steadily able to bring the set to an end on their terms at 25-23.
After they won the third set, Newington did not let the next two sets slip out of their hands. The fourth set was won by Newington at a considerable margin of 25-14 whereas the fifth one was bagged at 17-15.
Next in line for Newington is the championship match of the Class M that is scheduled to take place on Friday at Fairfield Warde High School.
