Newly built Handball Arena to hold London Handball Cup 2011 – Handball News
London will be echoing with the cheers of energetic girls as they play the handball tournament from November 23, 2011. The invitational tournament, named as the London Handball Cup, comprises of six handball teams converging from
all around the world. The tournament will take place in the newly constructed Handball Arena in the eastern part of London.
The arena is part of the Olympic Park, which will be used when the Olympic Games are held in London next year. The London Handball Cup is been planned and organized entirely by the London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG). It is
a sort of a test to understand the entire operations and functioning of the event that will give LOCOG a bird’s eye view of their stance just months before the start of the Olympic Games. The tournament will give the committee to check all of their preparations
including the area, equipments and every aspect of the event.
The London Handball Cup will feature Great Britain, Austria, Angola, Slovakia, Poland and China. The event will be taking place from November 23 to 27, 2011 with a day reserved for one match. The leading handball team in the women’s
category comes from Angola, who are nine times African Handball Champions. China too are a worthy opponent as they have been nine time runner ups in the Asian Handball Championships. Austria, in 1996, won the bronze medal when they participated in the European
Handball Championships. Poland came out on the fifth place in the 1998 European Handball Championships.
There are two groups in the London Handball Cup with three games each. In Group A, the three teams are China, Poland and Slovakia. In Group B, the three participating teams are Angola, Austria and Great Britain. On November 23,
2011, Slovakia will play China and Great Britain will play against Angola. China and Poland will then meet on November 24, 2011 with Angola going against Austria on the same day.
On November 25, 2011, Great Britain will face Austria while Slovakia will play Poland. The play-offs for the 5th and 6th spot of the tournament will be played on November 26, 2011. On the same day, the first
and second semi finals will also be contested. The bronze medal match of the tournament and the match for the gold and silver medals will be held on November 27, 2011.
