Newly signed Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan moves on from the World Cup heartbreak
In what was the club’s record breaking transfer, Ghanaian star striker Asamoah Gyan joined the Black Cats for a reported fee of 13 million pounds on the deadline day of transfer window. Asamoah Gyan burst onto the international scene when he scored three goals in Ghana’s dream run into the World Cup. Ghana faced the much improved Uruguayan side in the quarter finals. In the dying moments of the contest, Uruguayan Forward Luis Suarez denied the chance of Ghana progressing through to the next stage.
Suarez intentionally used his hands to pull the ball out of the net on the goal line and was thus sent off with a straight red card. Ghana was awarded the penalty and Gyan, who was the side’s leading goal scorer, stepped up to take it. The forward, however, failed to convert as he hit the post. Ghana then went on to loose the match on penalties and Uruguay managed to proceed to the semi finals.
Now with Sunderland, Gyan has officially announced that he has forgiven Luis Suarez for his goal-line handball and has claimed that had he been in place of Suarez, he would have done the same thing. The Black Cats fans were happy to see the player in action against Wigan on the weekend. It was Gyan’s penalty miss that broke the heart of Africa, which surely would’ve won it for the Black Stars.
“I’ve forgiven him – its part of the game. As I always say, if it was me, I would have done the same thing. In the last minute, if you’re going out, he made himself a hero in his country. It was cheating to handle the ball, but I would do the same”, claimed the Ghanaian international.
The player added that he might want to do the same for Sunderland in an important game and claimed that Suarez had done a great job for his country. Gyan stated that for Uruguay, Suarez is a hero as it was his doings that got his side into the semi-finals. Gyan claimed that he expected the referee to do something about it but didn’t complain as it is part of life. The forward also advocated that 90 percent of the times, he has scored a penalty for his side and has been doing a great job for his side.
That miss may be his biggest one but for him, it was part of life. Gyan still managed to convert a penalty in the penalty shootout, but has refused to live in the painful memories in South Africa. On the topic of his transfer fee, the player stated that he didn’t know if his worth was that much but claimed that with the quality he possesses, he would prove it. Now that everyone knows him because of the World Cup, it would be challenge for him to live up to the high expectations.
Gyan confirmed his superstitions when it came to numbers and chose the number 33 shirt. His favoured number 3 shirt was unavailable as it is currently worn by Kieran Richardson. The striker insisted that Number 3 is a lucky number for him and since the first day he wore it, it’s been good to him. The player added that numerology have always labelled number 3 as powerful. Gyan gave an example that when a person is about to lift a heavy object, one always counts to three.
On the lighter side of things, Gyan claimed that he loved music and writes his own songs. Asamoah added that he would love to sing to his team mates one day but would first have to get used to everyone as he is new. Gyan added that he sings all day long and tries to make people happy with it. Gyan was also happy to work alongside Bruce as he is a boyhood Manchester United fan. Gyan fancied Bruce’s former team mate Eric Cantona and confirmed that even now, he watches Cantona’s clips.
“He scored incredible goals, unexpected goals. As a striker you have to do that. You have to make the impossible possible. That makes you a good striker, like Alan Shearer”, claimed the 24 year old Black Star player.
