Newly-signed William Gallas aims to win over Premier League along with Tottenham Spurs
The Frenchmen completed his move from arch rivals Arsenal to Tottenham Hotspurs for one year contract. The player now aims for a Premier League medal with his new club, who finished their best-ever fourth in the competition last season. The defender believes that Spurs have the quality and depth in the squad to be serious title contenders.
By joining the Spurs, Gallas becomes the second high profile player to cross the North London divide, a feat only to be experienced by Sol Campbell back in 2001. Campbell was labelled as number 1 on the list of Football traitors at that time, and Gallas should expect a similar treatment for him from Arsenal fans. Campbell made an instant impact on Arsenal, as the defender helped the Gunners lift the Premier League title in the same season in which he made his controversial switch.
Hence, William Gallas wants to follow the footsteps of former teammate Sol Campbell and land the coveted trophy at White Hart Lane. The defender claimed that Spurs finishing fourth last season signals towards the fact that the North London club has improved greatly. The player hopes that the Spurs bring up their last season feat by finishing higher than 4th or even winning the league.
Gallas claimed that the team just needs to believe in themselves and that the team has a lot of young players who are extremely talented. The veteran added that youngsters would have to believe in the fact that they can achieve anything they want and that mentality can lead them to sure greatness.
The switch to rival club by Gallas is expected to stir a lot of bad blood between Gallas and Arsenal supporters. Gallas should also not expect a warm welcome at White Hart Lane, as many of the Spurs fans have learned to despise the French for his time at Arsenal.
Spurs Manager Harry Redknapp admitted that he had been in talks with the French defender for a couple of weeks and had to be convinced for joining Spurs from Arch-rivals Arsenal. The defender thus claimed that though it was not an easy decision to join Spurs, he is now a Spurs player and aims to do his best for his new employers.
"What is most important to me is to play games and to give everything,” claimed the 33-year-old French defender. Reports claimed that Gallas still needs two weeks to return to action and is currently undergoing still trainings with his new team mates. The player claimed that he just wants to be fit as soon as possible, train with his new colleagues and play matches for the Spurs. The defender added that he just wants to remind everyone that his career is not over yet and he is still here. The player is thus expected to miss the Champions League clash with Young Boys on Wednesday, which is a must win for the Spurs if they are to progress to the group stages of the UEFA Champions league. Spurs are to come back from a 3-2 deficit they suffered when they travelled to Switzerland to play the Young Boys.
On the topic of the Champions league, the defender claimed that his new club is ready for the Champions League, although they have to come back from a 3-2 deficit. Gallas is a veteran in the competition, as he has featured in the competition for 7 straight years. The player claimed that its good for any club to play at their best as they play against the top quality clubs of Europe and teams aim to show others how good they truly are. Gallas added that the atmosphere of playing in the Champions League is just outstanding and as soon as you hear the music of the Champions League, the players just want to play and give their all for the club in order to show what they are made of.
