Newport-Flat Out lifts 2011 United States Trust Cup Title: US Polo Update
Nic Roldan’s two notches during the six-chukka of play, including a penalty conversion in the final set of play, enabled Newport-Flat Out to win the title of the 2011 United States Trust Cup, played at the Grand Champions Polo Club, in Wellington, Florida.
Elangeni Ranch looked like it was ready to grab the triumph as it was leading the game by two goals after the five sets of play.
Newport was committed to make a comeback, which is what it did, and bounced back in the final chukka, scoring three goals and sealing the title-victory by 9-8.
The grand finale of the tournament opened with three handicap goals of Elangeni Ranch, while the two foursomes failed to add any goals from the field in the first seven and a half minutes of play.
Every player of Newport tried to circumvent the opponent contenders, Elangeni Ranch, in the opening period.
The two sides battled upward and downward with powerful hits and tricky dodges. But the first frame completed with only three handicap goals of Elangeni Ranch.
Diego Cossio fired off the first goal of the day in the second round, increasing the lead for Elangeni Ranch up to four goals, 4-0.
The resilient defence-line of Elangeni Ranch kept the opponents at bay once more, during the second frame.
The third set of play unfolded with a couple of goals at the hands of Juan Bollini. One of these two was marked on a penalty shot while the other from the field.
Nic Roldan notched Newport’s maiden goal to ultimately put his team on the scoreboard. Elangeni Ranch held a 6-1 advantage at halftime.
Diego Cossio and Brain Street worked together with one goal each, stretching the lead up to seven goals, 8-1.
In counter-offence, Nic Roldan hit a couple of consecutive goals on penalty shots, reducing the difference to five. Elangeni Ranch was holding an 8-3 score, with two frames left to play.
The Newport attackers flexed their muscles in the second last period, acquiring three goals and holding the opponents scoreless in the round.
A pair of notches by Gene Goldstein and Natascha Baecher from the field helped Newport to make a comeback into the play.
Nic Roldan hit a penalty shot in the dying seconds and completed the period with Newport trailing by only two goals, 8-6.
In an outstanding move, the Newport’s defensemen once again warded off Elangeni Ranch’s attacks in the final action.
Roldan boosted the morale of his teammates by whacking a penalty shot in the beginning minute of the last period, decreasing Elangeni Ranch’s lead down to a single goal.
In the later minutes, Baecher and Phillips accounted for a single goal, first levelling the results and then sealing the victory for Newport-Flat Out by 9-8. With the wonderful comeback-triumph, Newport-Flat Out also clinched the title of the 2011 US Trust
Cup.
