Newport cruises past Piaget in USPA Fall Classic: US Polo Update
Piaget is performing much better as compared to its position in the recent season but it appeared disturbed in the first round game of the USPA (United States Polo Association) Fall Classic Polo Tournament, played at the Grand Champions Polo Club, in the
Floridian city of Wellington, United States.
Newport cruised past Piaget by 12-11 goals in the heated game of the crucial tournament.
Piaget had a fine start but its good form was snapped by the Newport’s attackers, it was unable to regain the same momentum and lost the match by a single goal.
The first set of play was mostly dominated by Newport that began the game in quite an aggressive mode. The troika of Paul Knapp, Pite Merlos and Brandon Phillips scored one goal apiece to give Newport a three-goal edge at the beginning of the match.
Finally, Sugar Erskine (Piaget) came into action in the concluding minutes, scoring his first goal of the day from the field. The first chukka concluded with Newport leading the score by 3-1.
The second set of play was quite a hard-hitting period where Newport displayed a magnificent show.
Natalie Baecher (Piaget) lit the lamp only once in the second chukka, asserting the teams presence on the field.
But the game was not over thus far. Knapp and his teammate, Brandon Phillips, accounted for two and one goals, respectively for Newport.
The Newport foursome was hanging onto a four-goal lead, 6-2, after the two frames.
Injured Nic Roldan was replaced with Leo Mandelbaum in the third set of play and seconded his teammates in reducing Newport’s lead.
A couple of goals at the hands of Phillips further expanded Newport’s advantage up to six goals.
Gene Goldstein accompanied his teammate in taking Newport’s lead up to seven but Marc Ganzi again reduced it to six goals, 9-3, at the end of three chukkas of play.
Erskine nailed in a couple of goals in the beginning minutes of the fourth set of play. From the other side, Goldstein was the solitary scorer. Piaget was downed by five goals, 10-5, with two chukkas left to play.
Marc Ganzi and Mandelbaum were the point scorers for Piaget with two and one goals respectively, reducing Newport’s edge down to two goals.
Another goal from Phillips closed out the second last chukka with Piaget trailing behind by three goals, 11-8.
A pair of goals from Baecher and single from Ganzi tied the knots at eleven-all, with a few minutes remaining in the regular time period.
The duo’s attackers played openly in the waning minutes, executing many attacks against each other.
With seconds remaining on the clock, Merlos whacked a classic shot, registering a victory for Newport, by 12-11.
Whatsoever the results after the six-chukka of play, it was an enthralling game that provided great entertainment to the onlookers.
