I am off to newquay tis friday and would like tips on places to go that are a little alternative, and not too stag or hen/chav orientated, indie nights? also we plan to visit truro, padstow, lizard, and rock, any tips for those places, or things we should do while away there?

  1. Newquay is now being called the Benidorm of England because of it's drunken chav's. Also avoid Rock, as it is crawling with public school boys this month, and they're even worse than Newquay's chav's!!

Head back up to the S.E. of Cornwall, and visit Fowey, for it's anual regatta, which starts this Sunday, and a whole week of activities, firework displays, Red Arrows, and all sorts of sailing events. Whilst you're up there, visit Polperro, Looe, and if you want a bit of peace and quiet after roughing it in Newquay, come and visit the very beautiful little village I live in, Lerryn.

Believe me, you will not want to go back to Newquay, when you see what else Cornwall has to offer. Beats me why people are drawn there in the first place!!!

  2. Hi there.

Newquay is chav central, you are doomed - try and find one of the older pubs and check the adverts, but don't be too hopeful. You would have a better chance at Bude, if you can get up that far.

Padstow is hardly worth it, you will do better to hit Tintagel or Port Isaac instead - much prettier. Tintagel Cove and the castle are stunning and the cliff walks there are brilliant, Port Isaac is really quaint. The Lizard is fabulous, but avoid Lands End - dull, overpriced ripoff. You will see signs for the Cornish Cider Farm, stop off and buy a bottle or two. Chysauster iron age village was surprisingly cool, too. On the way back hit Kynance Cove, rated by many as the most beautiful in the country and well worth a stop.

Rock is okay, you can hire body boards and go for it! The food there was awful last time, so look for the guy with the beach barbecue and get the mackerel if he is there, otherwise there was a decent pasty shop there.

If you get close go to the Eden Project, which is stunning, and to the St Austell Brewery tour, which is excellent. Do both if you can, Eden if only one as you can spend all day there easily. Eden is like nowhere on earth and the brewery has the nicest staff in the area. the tour is quite interesting and they are usually selling off local beers at a good price.

If you can get out onto one of the moors and go for a wander, that is always memorable. I suggest Bodmin Moor, follow signs for the Hurlers stone circle and the Cheesewring (village is called Minion, I think). It is bleak and empty and wonderful, plus when you walk back there are good cream teas in the village.

    Enjoy, Steve.

  3. Agree with previous comments on Land's End. Padstow is very expensive. Rock is picturesque, but there's not much there other than sea and sand, although the toffs hang out there. Also very expensive.

Other things you can do? St Michaels Mount/Penzance, day trip to Scilly Isles, the cliffop open air Minack Theatre (towards the Lizard), Eden Project, Heligan Gardens (near Mevagissey), St Ives. You will be spoilt for choice!

  4. *Truro:

There isn't much to do for a tourist in Truro, other than stuff you could probably do where you live, it's basically shops although you could go to the Cinema or go Swimming or Something.

    *Padstow:

Padstow is a medium sized town in North Cornwall, it is a very busy place in the Summer months, in Padstow you could cycle down the famous Camel Trail to Wadebridge or further on to Bodmin, shop in their unique shops, go the nearby beach or you could catch a Ferry to Rock, as Rock is only just over the river.

    *Rock:

Rock is a small village just over the sea from Padstow, at Rock, you could go to either Rock or Porthilly beach, but they aren't the best beaches in that area, you could try some of the many watersports they have to offer, look in their small amount of shops or catch a ferry to Padstow, you may even see a celebrity or two, Rock is very popular with Celebrities.
