News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot
The News Sentinel Open is a golf tournament that is played on the Web.com Tour. Since 2011, the tournament has been sponsored by Pilot and this year again they are the prime sponsors for the event. This event is played annually at Fox Den Country Club in
Knoxville, Tennessee, USA.
This tournament was first played in 1990 but since then, it has had many sponsors and as a result it has been played under different names.
In 2010, it was played with name Knoxville News Sentinel Open, but from 2011, it is held with name of News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot.
It is one of the four original events of the Web.com Tour. The tournament does not boast a very huge sum of prize money but it is still good enough for such an event. The tournament’s purse is $500,000, with $90,000 going to the winner.
In 2011, it was the American Kirk Triplett who claimed victory at the News Sentinel Open.
Basically Web.com is small tour arranged for players getting ready to play on the PGA Tour. It is a sort of entry way for the players to get into the PGA Tour itself.
Many of the players just go and play on this tour to get into form and to earn some money.
This year, it is the 23rd anniversary of the Web.com Tour and a total of 27 official golfing events are played on it. The top 25 players, at the end of the season, earn a PGA Tour card for the next season.
The Fox Den golf and country club is a pretty challenging golf course, with many trees all around, which means that any bad shot can cost a player big time.
The golf course was first opened for public in 1959. It initially had nine holes but later on it was extended to 18.
The place where the golf course is established was previously a Fox breeding farm and this is why it is known as Fox Den. Many of the facilities of that breeding farm are still in use by the golf course.
The Web.com Tour is very unpredictable and to defend a title is extremely difficult. Although Kirk is in good form but it would be very difficult for him to defend his title.
