News from Thailand Open & Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament
Thiemo de Bakker from Netherlands and Viktor Troicki of Serbia secured straight set victories in the opening round of the Thailand Open tennis tournament on Monday.
The sixth seeded Thiemo shook off a poor start to defeat his Spanish tennis foe, Marc Lopez in a two setter clash. The final match score was 7-5, 6-0. Victor, on the other hand, who is seeded number seven to win the title in Thailand
Open, got the better of Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 6-1 from Switzerland. Victor was also a runner up here back in 2009.
De Bakker commented on Marc’s game after the match by saying “He played pretty well. I had some problem finishing the shots at the beginning. Then at 2-5, we got new balls and it was much better and I began to have more confidence.
Then it started going really well.”
The twenty two year old Dutch tennis player, as a result of this victory will face Daniel Brands from Germany, who ousted his Ukrainian tennis foe, Illya Marchenko in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
When asked about Daniel’s game, De Bakker said that he has huge serves and it would be hard without any question. However, he is hopeful that he will manage to play the way he played yesterday.
In other opening round matches, Florent Serra from France managed to topple his Russian tennis opponent, Teymuraz Gabashvili in three sets. The final match score was 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4.
On Tuesday, the fifth seeded tennis ace, Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina will play Olivier Rochus of Belgium in his opening clash since being sidelined as a result of wrist injury earlier this year during the month of January.
The world number one Rafael Nadal and three other top seeds received a first round bye into the tournament.
In some other action, the Japanese veteran tennis player Kimiko Date Krumm dismissed last year’s winner Maria Sharapova of Russia, in the opening round of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament on Monday. The final match score
was 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Date Krumm, managed to beat her twenty three year old Russian opponent to go up 5-3 in the third set and won the last game when Maria’s backhand went wide.
“To play against a former World No. 1 and defending champion, I knew I had to play to the best of my ability. I just came back from Korea yesterday and was really tired,” she said. “My body felt a little better today but this surface
was a lot faster than the one in Korea,” said Date Krumm, who made a comeback to the competitive tennis back in 2008 after a twelve year layoff.
In second-round clashes, Jelena Jankovic, a third seeded Serbian dispatched off Alona Bondarenko from Ukraine in a two setter clash 6-4, 6-1 whereas the sixth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Olga Govortsova
on Monday.
Maria, the championship’s 12th seeded ace, had a total of eleven double-faults in the match that concluded in the time period of two hours and nine minutes at Ariake Colosseum.
The Russian broke to go up 3-2 in the decisive set and was leading 40-love during the sixth game when she double-faulted on two occasions before being broken.
“Momentum is so big in tennis. If you give your opponent a chance they can get confident and take the momentum away. Date Krumm played quite impressively. It just shows you how she has stayed in such great shape while away from
the game. She is incredibly fit,” said Sharapova after the match on Monday.
Krumm had just returned from Seoul where she was hammered down in the quarters of the Korea Open tennis tournament.
