Newspaper machine hack?

is there a way to open the newspaper machine with out money. i seen my brother in law do it a couple of time but he wont tell me. if you know how it is done tell me.

He could have been putting you on. For instance he put the money in opened the machine then closed it so where it could be opened again. Or the coin on the string thing.
