Newton happy to respond to criticism on the field - NFL News
Cam Newton’s incredible first season as a National Football League Pro has shut all his doubters and critics who believed that the quarterback did not merit a first round draft pick selection.
The analysts were in full voice during Newton’s first three weeks in the National Football League criticising the rookie’s throwing ability and his penchant for sulking when things are not going his way. The criticism was so rampant that legendary quarterback
and Hall of Famer Warren Moon believed that Newton being African-American was the reason many critics had his number.
However, Newton has risen above the criticism and did all his talking on the football pitch. The quarterback created 20 passing touchdowns and a record 14 on the rush to silence his critics and give Panthers fans something to cheer about.
Newton in an interview for the ESPN Magazine said.
"I had people who can't throw a football telling me my mechanics were wrong," ."I had people taking shots at my character, classifying me as a thug, as a hoodlum. After Week 3 or 4, all these same people wanted an interview. I said, 'You were giving me all
this c**p and had so much to say about how I was going to play, and now you want to talk? No. Just sit back and watch the show, man.' "
The quarterback also went on to say that the poor performances of African-American quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young also played a part. He believes that their poor performances at the position led to analysts getting the belief that all African-American
quarterbacks cannot perform on the big stage and that is what he wanted to prove wrong.
"I can't sit up here and look at it like, 'Oh man, my critics are racist,' " Newton said. “I want people to say 'He can be the next Cam Newton'"
Newton’s name is already on every National Football League fans mouth. The rookie quarterback has been breaking records and milestones right from the start. The feat becomes even more impressive with the fact that Newton did not take part in a full preseason
practice session. The quarterback broke Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning’s rookie season record for passing yards and has been selected as the first alternate for the 2012 Pro-Bowl National Football Conference team.
The Panthers and Newton will play their final game of the regular season against New Orleans Saints on Sunday as they look to finish the season with a 7-9 record.
